NYSox35
SI.com reports that the Tigers have signed free agent Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract. Garcia hasn't pitched since last June following shoulder surgery and reportedly wasn't especially impressive while working out for a dozen teams earlier this month, but the Tigers could certainly use the pitching help as much as any contending team. He'll report to Single-A for what figures to be at least a couple starts before potentially joining the Detroit staff, but don't expect any fantasy value this season. DBAHO
I doubt he'll make much of an impact this season, but it's annoying that he'll be pitching in our division, so I imagine we could very well face him at some point.
The Ginger Kid
glad to see Fred is making it back. Weird that he would go to a team that's going nowhere - you would think he'd want to showcase himself in a pennant race at least, if not in the playoffs. elrockinMT
Freddie signed a deal with the Tigers. Plans are to do some throwing and then a start at Class A before moving up to AAA. Nothing guaranteed in the deal aparently. Story on MLB
Whitewashed in '05
Dealt in the 2006 offseason for Aaron Rowand, Garcia went 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA in 11 starts with Philadelphia last year before undergoing season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum, the first lengthy absence of his career. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...sp&c_id=mlb
