With Boston looking like dung lately and their best players playing with injuries, that WC very well could come out of the AL Central.

I agree although I wouldn't say they're playing like dung. 7-3 over their last 10 isn't bad at all. Ortiz seems to be getting back to form.

They do have a difficult schedule so it's very possible. Our Fenway series against them will loom large in this discussion.

We have some guys having pretty damn good seasons like Quentin, AJP, Dye, Thome, Lexi with guys like Swish, Konerko and even Crede capable of going nuts in the playoffs/WS.

Our pitching, however, remains iffy and could go either way. Should be interesting, but we're right there. It'd be very disappointing to not get in after being right there for so long.

I would not be very comfortable with winnning the wild card. If we do we probably play the angels in the first round which would be a lot tougher than playin the rays. I know the rays are doing so well but with the injuries and all id rather face them even if we had to play the first two in tampa.

If we win the first round and have to play them in the ALCS (assuming they win, but who knows with baseball), what's the difference really?

Agreed, no matter what when you are in the playoffs you are playing playoff quality teams. Lining up Angels before Tampa or Tampa before Angels really doesnt matter

It would be kind of cool if the Twins and White Sox both made the playoffs and ended up facing each other in the ALCS.

Right and if we lose, it doesn't matter what round we lose in. Could be the first round, could be the World Series. There are really only 3 tiers of success in baseball IMO:

Missing the playoffs - doesn't matter if you are the 5th team that just missed, or finish in last in your division, you still miss the opportunity to compete at the next level

Making the playoffs - unless you are just that dominant and heavily favored, the odds of beating the other 3 teams are a wash and it's a crapshoot

Winning the World Series - self-expanatory, and once you've done it, there is nothing else to say

Whatever happens between those tiers is irrelevant.

Why not? To me, a big part of going into the playoffs is conquering your demons. In 05, the Sox handled two teams that gave them a lot of problems during the season (Boston and Anaheim). If the Sox make the playoffs this year, I want them to go against teams that think they have a pushover in the Sox. Honestly I see Tampa thinking they can dominate the Sox much more than the Angels do. Scioscia is really good about keeping his teams even keeled and under control, Tampa is a team full of young and talented players no doubt, but they are also very inexperienced in a playoff setting.

And in regards to the Twins, I want it settled. If the Sox end up facing them in the ALCS, I expect it to go 7 games, with some hard fought games. They are two teams who were not supposed to be there, with MVP candidates on both teams(Morneau, Quentin and Dye), solid pitching staffs who are somewhat dominant at home and so-so on the road, same with the Bullpen, and both teams have very good closers.

When it comes to playoffs, I hate the theory of shying away from "better" competition in the hopes of an easier road to the World Series. Teams that learn to overcome adversity in both the season and playoffs win the World Series, plain and simple.

We have Carlos Quentin!

If I were a child being conditioned in Brave New World, this would be the phrase being repeated over and over under my pillow.

Someone told me yesterday that Carlos Quentin doesn't do push ups. He does earth downs. He also told me Carlos Quentin counted to infinity..............twice.

I know that any way you slice it the road to the world series is most likely gonna go through anaheim. I know momentum is only as good as your next starting pitcher but i think if we could beat up on a young inexperienced team in their first playoff run in their existence, that would mean a lot going into a possible alcs with the angels. But, either way i have confidence in our guys hopefully theyll keep this hot streak or get hot right as they head into the playoffs, because its almost always the hottest team at the start of the playoffs that wins it.

Exactly. I was disappointed the Sox did not end up playing the Yankees (and Cardinals to a lesser extent) in 2005 postseason. It was a little muted but some outlets insinuated the Sox lucked out by the Angels taking care of the Yankees. I wanted the Sox to knock off all the so-called baseball royalty along the way.

As did I. I also wanted the Sox to clinch something, anything at home. But I'll take 2005 just as it happened with no complaints.
