scenario
QUOTE (False Alarm @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 12:24 AM) i dunno man. paiml. retherford. kendall and greene at bristol. think i've seen someone talk about how lucky we are to be stacked with talent like mollenhauer in our middle infield. i mean, peeps enjoy the minors in different ways so it's all good talking about these types of guys. they've just gotten more attention than i'd expect. I'm probably one of the guilty parties in talking about these guys. Mostly because I love minor league baseball and end up posting about what guys are doing. I'm not trying to give fringe players more respect than they deserve. Just trying to make sure guys get attention for good performances... Because who really knows who will pop out of the system? Nobody would have given Mark Buehrle a chance to make it to MLB based on where he was drafted... etc. etc. Outside of the obvious choices... top draft picks... you end up turning over lots of rocks to find a gem in the minors. (And alot of the obvious picks don't turn out to be much... which is what makes developing minor league players such a crapshoot.) BTW - Out of the guys you mentioned above, the one I would suggest could turn out to be really interesting would be Retherford. The kid is a player and worthy of more attention than he is getting. JPN366
QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 06:56 PM) What exactly does the GM for a minor league team do? Everything but player personnel stuff.
JPN366
QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 08:55 PM) Soooo... the one time you saw him he sucked, eh? I guess we should just ignore the fact he's had over a .900 OPS two years in a row then. (Sorry... not vicious sarcasm... just mild.) JPN knows a fair bit about him since he has season tickets to the Barons games. I'm sure he'll chime in on the subject soon. I've never ever, ever seen anyone hit the ball as hard as David. He hit the most perfect homeruns, absolute 450 foot laser shots. He's got scary power, major league power. Ryan Braun almost hit the ball as hard as Cook when he was with Huntsville in 2006. He is also fundamentally sound. Draws a ton of walks and has great plate discipline, very selective. He is the most locked in, focused hitter I'ver ever seen. When he swings, he fills the strike zone with his bat. He may not have done much in the NESN game, but I do remember he moved a runner over that was driven in by the next batter. He barely missed a homerun in that game too. More productive outs than not. That's why he was the Barons MVP in the first half. B'ham clinched the first half on a walk off sac fly from Cook in extra innings. It doesn't matter how old he is, he is a stud. If the White Sox don't hold onto him, they will regret it. Put him on the 40 man, start him in Charlotte next year, let him rake for a month or two, then call him up.
ChiSox_Sonix
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 04:42 PM) I would, he's not very good. The last thing this team needs is another outfielder. If anything, call up Owens for pr purposes. We dont need any more OFs, you're right. But i really think the Sox need to call up Owens when rosters expand. Someone with his speed available to pinch run would be invaluable later this season in some game(s), i'm sure of it
