Heads22
The Sox second round draft pick is reportedly close to a deal with the Sox. Chances are he will wait to sign until later this month after the Iowa Class 3A baseball playoffs as Cedar Rapids Xavier is rated #1 in Class 3A. From USA TODAY: Player of the week: CF-LHP Ryan Sweeney of Xavier (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a two-run home run in a doubleheader sweep of Dubuque Wahlert. Sweeney, a second-round pick of the Chicago White Sox, is batting .493 with seven home runs and 37 RBI and is 3-1 with a 0.55 ERA. Iowa 3A Rankings: 1. Cedar Rapids Xavier (1) 2. Knoxville (2) 3. Davenport Assumption (3) 4. Western Dubuque (8) 5. West Delaware (4) 6. Decorah (6) 7. Creston (7) 8. Vinton-Shellsburg (5) 9. Waukee (9) 10.Clear Lake (10) Shameless Oelwein Plug: My Oelwein Huskies, who started 2-7, are now 19-9, and 14-0 in their conference which includes Decorah. Decorah's only losses have come to Oelwein. Chances are, if both Oelwein and Xavier make it to state, they could play, as Oelwein would most likely be a lower seed. If that's the case, I'll give you a report on Sweeney and try to take pictures.

Heads22
Do you play? No. I watch and listen.
Chisoxfn
Do you play? I think he was playing when they were 2-7, then they realized it wasn't good to have Heads as the starting pitcher for every game. Then the winning streak was a coming Thats sweet news on Sweeney. I know he is going to sign, I thought he was going to finish the highschool season before hand. The Sox must of stepped up there offer. Heads22
I'll type you up a FutureSox report on him tomorrow, Jas. Go Huskies!
Heads22
Well since they went 2-7, their only two losses came to the number 2 and 5 team in 2A.
southsider2k5
Boy I hope this is right, I was really worried about losing Sweeney. If we get this kid locked up that means we have AT LEAST our top 10 picks all signed. When was the last time, if ever, we have done that? Ventura23
I played against him a few years back in a tourney in Iowa. This kid is a BEAST. He hit tee shot home runs every time I saw him bat. His swing was like something out of one of those Tom Emanski videos. He was like a robot. And he was a LHP who threw gas! I kept my eye on him after I saw him, and sure he enough he showed up on Baseball America lists. I can't imagine there was a round and a half of better prospects available this year. I'm really looking forward to seeing is development.
Cerbaho-WG
I think it's important for Sweeney to finish out his HS baseball career, and it's a good decision by the Sox to let him do so.
Rex Hudler
I think it's important for Sweeney to finish out his HS baseball career, and it's a good decision by the Sox to let him do so. I agree. They are ranked #1 in the state. There is no way you give up the opportunity to play for a state championship.
Chisoxfn
Agreed. He'll still get to play a full month of rookie ball (Thats if they sign him right after his season is over) and then next year he could be ready for a full season, who knows. Not if the Oelwein Huskies have anything to do with it!

Loaiza21
He'd have about 5 if he played for the White Sox. Tough luck Loaiza.
SoxFan1
Is Sweeney a hitter or pitcher?
KipWellsFan
Both, but I believe but we signed him with the intention to be in the outfield.
Chisoxfn
Both, but I believe but we signed him with the intention to be in the outfield. Yep, he has one of the best arms of all of the outfielders in the past couple of drafts. The kid can throw in the low to mid 90's.
