Guest hotsoxchick1
Pirates' Simon booked after hitting one of Brewers' racing -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press sausages< misdemeanor battery and released; ADDS quotes< MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Pittsburgh first baseman Randall Simon was booked for misdemeanor battery for hitting one of the Milwaukee Brewers' popular racing sausages with a bat during Wednesday night's game. Simon was released, said a spokeswoman for the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department, who asked not to be identified. Simon will meet with the district attorney's office Thursday, and it will be up to prosecutors to determine whether formal charges are filed. In an event that's a fan favorite at Miller Park, four people in sausage costumes race around the bases between the sixth and seventh innings at Milwaukee Brewers games. The team conducts their spring training at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix where the racing sausages provide similar entertainment. Film of Wednesday night's race showed that when the group went past the Pirates' third-base dugout, Simon took a two-handed chop at the Italian sausage character _ portrayed by a 20-year-old South Milwaukee woman _ hitting her from behind and causing her to tumble to the ground. As she fell, a nearby sausage _ the hot dog _ went down as well. Simon was on the top step of the dugout and reached over the railing to make contact. ``They were doing the sausage race. He hit her with the baseball bat,'' said Deputy Inspector Sherry Warichak of the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department, which provides security at Brewers games. ``When he hit her, that other character fell.'' ``They both were treated at the scene for scraped knees, but at this point I don't think they have any other complaints,'' she said. She declined to release the names of the women. Warichak said the two women, along with Simon, were interviewed at the stadium. Simon drew boos from many of the fans when he was later used as a pinch-hitter in the seventh. He grounded out in a game Milwaukee won 2-1 in 12 innings. Pirates outfielder Reggie Sanders said he thought the weight of the head on the sausage costume contributed to the fall. ``It maybe made it look worse than it was,'' Sanders said. ``It was an unfortunate situation and, hopefully, it gets resolved.'' ``It was very strange,'' he said. Rick Schlessinger, the Brewers' executive vice president for business operations, said he felt Simon's ``conduct is just unjustified.'' Schlessinger said he was in contact with Larry Silverman, vice president/baseball legal counsel for the Pirates. Ryan Borghoff, 16, who wore the bratwurst costume in the race, called the episode ``unbelievable.'' ``He just hit the costume and she fell over,'' he said. ``These things are so top-heavy that it doesn't take much.'' Borghoff went on to win the race. ``Somebody had to, I guess,'' he said.
Chisoxfn
The Pirates have no choice but to put Simon on waivers and I'd hope no team would pick him up for at least this season. That is absolutely ridiculous. These guys are just working part time jobs and I doubt they make all that much. I guarandamntee its nowhere near what you made Simon. If I were a judge I'd say that Simon's contract has to get paid to the guy who was hit by Simon.
YASNY
He was charged for misdeamor battery. No way can the judge do anything even close to that.
Chisoxfn
He was charged for misdeamor battery. No way can the judge do anything even close to that. I'm sure he couldn't do it, but for cripe sakes these are basically kids. Two of them women (Both 20 or so) and then a 16 year old boy. What the hell is Simon, a millionaire even thinking. I guess I have to wait until I see a highlight of this. Stupid sportscenter didn't show it during the game highlights. That or I missed it. Well at least I'd have him suspended for 10 games (MLB Rules) without pay.
YASNY
He should be treated, by the local authorities, the same they would treat a fan that attacks a player. Then MLB needs to put the hammer down on him.... HARD.

Spiff
lol it's so f***ed up, but the mental image just makes me laugh. "As she fell, a nearby sausage--the hot dog--went down as well." Grainy video rolling through my head, similar to the Zapruder film, only with giant sausages falling on each other.

Well if ever there was a time for this one it's now . . . I was really pissed because I had the hotdog in a little ballpark bet with Pete Rose. Pirates and Brewers? Of course there really isn't anything else for the players to do since they both have wrapped up their division. I'll bet the league will relish a chance to apply some justice to a situation like this. An amazing turn of events, at the end of the race the player winds up in some hot water. The Italian sausage was mad but her boyfriend the bun was really steamed. (If only a guy went down the reverse would have somehow been more satisfying) Punishment? He should have to be the italian sausage and do the home run slide at the nest Brewers game. The 6,300 people that attend will be very amused. mreye
I just saw the footage of this and it's not bad at all! If you've been to a Brewers' game you'll know that the hats on the sausages are very tall. The person's actual head is far below the hat. Simon hit the sausage in the top of the hat - softly. It was in good fun. We've all laughed at footage made famous on sports bloopers shows of mascots getting pummeled by players or mascots body slamming other mascots. This was not any different. SI1020
In Pittsburgh Simon was known as a playful guy with a real good sense of humor. I didn't see the incident but I have to believe he was kidding around and just used poor judgement. Of course maybe he thought it was John Rocker in one of those sausage costumes. How can this guy be defended, there's just no point in doing it, all that can happen is something bad. Play baseball and don't worry about other crap
