So I'm thinking of going to Japan

So I casually suggested to someone that I was going to visit Japan in the spring, and the more I think about it the more I might really do it. I have a friend who's been there, and I know a girl who lives there who will be a "tour guide" of sorts.

Anyone else ever been?

Tour guide, escort, whatever it is you call them these days.

For the record this is her. Yes, she's pretty hot if you're into Asian girls.

I have to start saving money... I think I'm gonna end up blowing a LOT of cash in support of the Japanese economy. I'll try not to but i know I will. Then I'll have to save money cuz I forgot I was also going to Croatia later next year for a family trip/reunion/get-back-to-roots thing (lol, how many black people go to Croatia to get back to their roots?)

If you are married, I wouldn't suggest going without taking extreme precautions before and during the trip. She looks like a lot of fun, and like somebody who could get a married man into a lot of trouble.

Nah just kidding. You can be just friends with anybody as long as both sides know the deal, and I'm sure that's the case here. Have a good time!

I have a buddy of mine going with who is so game-challenged that he has effectively (but unintentionally) cock-blocked me in the past, and plus he is a little fruity. I think that is enough protection from any misdeeds, even if I tried, he would f*** it up for me. :lolhitting

In all seriousness though she knows me better than that and she wouldn't mess with me knowing I'm married. I think she likes my wife though. Too bad I only have enough money for me to go.

OK, here's a serious response as to what I'd like to do in Japan. I have not been, so these are not suggestions based on experience, mind you, but I've wanted to go my whole life. My wife has little desire to go, but my daughter wants to so when she turns 18 I told her I'd take her there as a birthday present.

I would spend enough time in Tokyo to get a feel for it. Eat good sushi, drink a ton of nigori, and maybe work up the courage to try fugu. I would take my daughter to the Abbey Road Live House and watch the Parrots, probably the best Beatles tribute band in the world with a playlist of more than 200 songs (the Beatles only officially released (214).

I would see the snow monkeys up in the mountains.

I would go in the spring to see the Sakura (cherry blossoms) blooming.

I would see Mt. Fuji.

I'd like to do some scuba diving in Okinawa.

I would tour a couple of Sea of japan aquaculture farms (Seriola, Porphyra, yesso scallops), and then I could write the trip off as a business expense. :)

I would pay my respects to the Hiroshima kami at the Atomic Bomb Memorial, and I'd try to go on a game day to see a baseball game as well. I'd visit Hiroshima castle while there as well.

I would tour a sake brewery and drink some more nigori, hopefully for free.

I would take in as many countryside Shinto shrines as my daughter will tolerate.

That's all I can think of right now. Wow, good thing i have 8 years to save up!

If you go, have fun!

Thanks Jim. I was thinking about going to Okinawa but i'm not sure how to get there on public transportation... isn't there a ferry or something?

Most of my time will be spent around Tokyo, actually in Yokohama. She told me she will take me to some big Buddhist temple, and this would be in the spring so the cherries would probably be blossoming.

I've got a while to figure this out but I'm about 85% sure I'm going now. I'm applying for my passport tomorrow morning.

Yeah, there are some two-day ferry excursions to get to Okinawa Island and, longer excursions to get into the more southern Ryukyu islands.

I hope you make the trip, it will probably be a trip of a lifetime.

I'm definitely making the trip. I applied for a passport on Saturday. Later, in September, I'm going to Croatia.
