Parental Units - Halloween costume stuff

My neighbor (fellow sox fan) came over all giddy to show us the costume that his son is wearing this year... he's 16 months old. It's a goat. Now this costume is super cute, and I know the kid doesn't know any better, but this being my first year doing this stuff and seeing how much of a big deal it is to the neighbor, as he is convinced the Cubs are going to blow it, I started to get a bit concerned. I stopped at the store today and there are like 30 costumes to choose from. And they aint the little plastic face things I remember from loooong ago either. $40 for a halloween costume... is this for real???

Welcome to the absurdity of parenthood. I went to a 1 year olds birthday party at my old Country Club. Clowns, inflatables, pool, giant cake like something you would see on TV. Best part, it was their child number 4. Other over the top changes from when I went to school. Kindergarten graduation with cap and gown. Junior High formal with tux and limos.

Look around Steff, you can find good kid costumes for reasonable prices. My sister found my 1 1/2 year old niece a cute duck costume, and it seems like it will be comfortable for her. Go to those Halloween stores that pop up in strip malls. By my work in Crystal Lake we have 2 literally a quarter mile from each other so the prices are really good.

I've always loved Halloween and had great times as a kid and as an adult, but for real young kids probably the most important thing is that they're comfortable in their costume, you get a few cute pics out of it and you use them to score free candy from neighbors

What I find ridiculous is the "ADULTS" that were fighting over the costumes at Party City last year. The line was out the door.

Grow up you idiots.

The sad thing is they were probably fighting over the same pimp suit costume that about 20 other people will have at the party. I love going to Halloween parties and dressing up and I will be 30 next year, but I try to put some thought in my costumes. I'm not the most creative person in the world, but I've always managed to come up with different costumes that people liked for reasonable prices

There is one on 59 I'm going to try today. And I agree comfort is #1 at this point. She's only going to be wearing the thing to Jim's office and maybe a stroll around the neighborhood.

You probably already figured this out, but one of the cool parenthood things is being able to do all the fun kid stuff again without being arrested, like trick or treating. And don't forget the matching costume for you ;)

And one last thing, from Robin Williams

Micky Mouse to a 3 year old is a 6 foot f***ing rat. Try to imagine those costumes that are coming towards her from her perspective.

Last year my kid wore a devil costume for Halloween and it was really cute. He had just turned 1 (his birthday is the 29th, he is a Halloween baby). But my wife took it off of him as soon as she came home, before I could take pictures. Then she acted all surprised that I WTFed.

Girls like to dress up. Get something she can wear all the time. Or trade costumes year to year with another parent.

But, yeah. Like someone else said: get used to it. We spend a lot of time at "Once Upon a Child." Very good deals.

I went there today - they opened one the size of a warehouse in Joliet. It's the size of Costco!!. Anyway, didn't find much there that would fit her that's not bunting. She's still just over 15lbs which is 3-6 month territory. I did find a few that I liked at that halloween store on 59 and Jim and I are going to go tomorrow night to look. He wants to see them... he didn't get to do this stuff the first time around so he's waaaay to involved :lolhitting . But my leading ones are a flower, a duck with cute striped leggings, and a really cute princess - but that one concerns me because of the weather as it has exposed arms. I saw a couple that were absolutely adorable for newborns.. a whoopie cushion bunting, and a slice of pizza bunting.

Love this

Though she probably wouldn't when she saw pictures of it in 5 years.

:lolhitting

Yup... get those blackmail pics when you can... :D

I think Alissa's going as a mermaid this year. She has a fascination with Little Mermaid. Mrs. Kap's going to make the costume, if she feels up to it.

We'll have to post some pics of the kiddos somewhere.

LOL. She'll probably have a gazillion other reasons to be pissed at me bigger than this... or maybe she'll be a baseball freak like me and actually like it... hmmm.

I saw a Little Mermaid costume at the Disney store pretty reasonably priced if mama wants to take the easy road.

Is that a baseball uniform or a prison outfit? :lolhitting

Thanks for the tip about the new OUaC. I'll have to let Jen know.

My mom made mine when I was a kid, Im sure it was cheaper than buying the overpriced crap they have on sale today.

And for older people, why go to a store and buy a pre-packaged outfit? Put some f***ing thought into it, go to a resale shop, look in your closet for f***s sake.

Not all of us have feather boas and high heels in our closets Rock ;)
