If we score in the first, we lead 1-0. Who knows if Gavin gives up 3 runs if he has a lead. Maybe he gives up more. Who knows.

I think that in the first inning a pitcher is still trying to think about giving up as few runs as possible and the score is completely irrelevant, especially if we are talking about a 1 run difference. You'd be on to something if we were talking about the 6th or 7th inning probably.
