Then again... one month before the election, everything either of them does is going to be viewed that way. Soxbadger
The part about McCain coming in and saving the bail out was pretty predictable. I told my sister last night that if Republican's were really smart they would stall on the bail out and then have McCain come to Washington as the savior and fix it. The only problem is if people believe that a President has to face multiple challenges and that McCain should be able to handle a debate and the economy, because if this was some sort of international crisis and economic crisis he couldnt just call up the international crisis and suspend it while he works on the other one. Rex Kickass
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2008 -> 10:39 AM) Its not just that one piece. Its been the Clinton's behavior ever since it because clear that Barack was going to be the nominee. They have pretty well undercut him every chance they got, even when it didn't make any sense. Something like this is just another piece of that puzzle IMO. I would say that this is more Bill Clinton's behavior rather than Hillary. Hillary has actually been quite the good soldier. Hillary has actually been quite the good soldier. I concur, and I've been a pretty big Hillary hater for a while to boot. Even if she's being phony and talking through clenched teeth, she's giving at least the impression that she's completely in the tank for Obama. HuskyCaucasian
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 25, 2008 -> 06:34 AM) Not sure if this was already mentioned in here: Maybe the main objective in all of this is to stall for Palin and give her more time to learn on the job. HuskyCaucasian
seems like McCain didnt REALLY suspend his campaign: Lemme see, two of McCain's press spokespeople on TV attacking Obama; McCain attack ads up on TV across the country. This is the suspension? What did I miss? The guy is literally out of control. At what point do his friends need to start discussing an intervention? BigSqwert
Bob Barr has finally sensed his opening. With Senator McCain calling for Friday's debate to be postponed, the former Georgia congressman and Libertarian Party nominee says he is eager to fill in as a replacement. "Given Senator McCain's political stunt to avoid the debate, I ask that Friday's debate moves forward without him, as I am more than willing to step in to participate," Mr. Barr said in a statement this morning. Mr. Barr, who is polling in the low single digits, was excluded from the three presidential debates and had been planning to host a separate, simultaneous event Friday night in which he responded to the candidates and the questions in real time. LINK If this were to happen it would be a death blow for McCain. Giving Barr a spotlight will eat into McCain votes.
HuskyCaucasian
McCain admits he hasn't had a chance to look at the Paulson plan yet. Is he kidding? I'd open it up to the "main 3" (Barr, Obama and McCain) and maybe even throw in Ralph Nader to be fair. What I'm saying is what if Obama shows up to the debate and McCain doesn't thus allowing Obama to debate Barr? Barr would get a nation wide audience to hear his views and since his constituency is mostly conservative, McCain's absence could blow up in his face. BigSqwert
So if that were to happen and Barr were invited as a replacement, Obama would get free airtime to millions of viewers to spell out his goals as President and Barr would get a free opportunity to introduce himself to America. BigSqwert
I like this comment from a TPM reader: The current stunt is certainly at the top of the list, but I think there is another aspect of his rash decision to suspend the Republican National Convention that has not been commented on enough. It wasn't just that he truncated the convention. It was that his campaign leaked that he might give his acceptance speech by live feed from the disaster zone. As if he, John S. McCain III, somehow had to be there......doing what? Commandeering FEMA? This idea that McCain had to be there in the disaster zone instead of addressing his party in St. Paul is in some ways even more ridiculous than the notion that only he could save the Wall Street bailout and that the only way to do that is to "suspend" his campaign. (Although as you and John Aravosis point out, he has a funny way of suspending his campaign given that he's doing everything he was planning on doing anyway, except debating Obama.) HuskyCaucasian
Obama Will Make Debate A Townhall If McCain Doesn't Show Barack Obama is committed to hosting a public, televised event Friday night in Mississippi even if John McCain does not show up, a source close to the Obama campaign tells the Huffington Post. The Senator, the source says, is willing to make the scheduled debate a townhall meeting, a one-on-one interview with NewsHour's Jim Lehrer, or the combination of the two in McCain's absence. Such a course of action could make life incredibly difficult for McCain, who has called for the suspension of the debate in light of the current economic crisis. Should he stay in Washington D.C. -- if a bailout if not completed by then -- and let Obama alone reach tens-of-millions of television viewers? A lot, of course, depends upon what the debate commission decides to do. At this point in time, there is no indication that they are going to postpone the affair, as the McCan campaign has asked.
