is columbus day a major holiday? i never get it off :crying

We observe it, but that's because it's Native American Day and there are quite a few in the area. Works for me, I got drunk last night and didn't have class today.

National primary is dumb. I realize some states won't always get to be heard, and this one seemed like a marathon, but it grants a longer time to weed out the candidates and get a feel for them and their ideas. It's better for political discourse.

I would love to see election day a holiday. The thing is I bet it would make a minimal difference in voter turnout in the long run. People who want to vote, will vote. Those who don't, won't.

Probably a small increase, but you're right, not a huge one.

I think it has another benefit, though. It gets people thinking about it, and taking it more seriously in their lives. Organizations and communities can host discussions and panels where people talk it out, before going to the booth.

I am going to be a cynic and propose it would lower voting as people use it as an excuse to go somewhere, do something. For example taking Friday off as well and adios out of town.

Technology is making it easier and easier to vote. We already allow absentee paper ballots, I see a day with absentee computer ballots. There are many issues with voter intimidation and fraud to be worked out, but I believe they can.

Agreed. Bad idea.

Back on topic. I don't see how 1 day off every 2 or 4 years to allow people more opportunity to take part in their civic duty could hurt. I say get rid of Presidents Day and/or Columbus Day and replace it with Election Day even on Midterm election years.

Also, what does everyone think of having a National Primary? I'm somewhat conflicted on whether it would be good or bad for the process.

I have a big issue with a national primary. It violates the freedom of speeches of each of the political parties, and of the individual states to decide how they want to pick a Presidential candidate. Once the candidates are picked, then the federal system should take over.
