NorthSideSox72 Posted October 24, 2008 Share Posted October 24, 2008 I make a small donation once a year to my undergrad school, which makes me a member of the alumni association. I do this because of what the school did for me, and because I believe it is an excellent university that should be well-funded. Education is just so very important, and good schools need funding to continue to be good. clyons Posted October 24, 2008 Share Posted October 24, 2008 I don't contribute to my college alma-mater, but I give annually to the private scholarship fund that helped send me there. I loved that place and I think it really fostered a sense of community and was a place where I met some of my closest friends. Typically, at least at the universities I've been at, contributions/dues to the alumni association do not actually go to run the university. For tax purposes, alumni association funded events have to be kept separate from moneys that go to fund the actual university itself. ISU Alumi Assoc does fund events and administration for itself, but most of its money goes to the university - buildings, programs, etc. Unless they are out-and-out lying. With regard to the specific academic departments I was schooled under, I have given to specific funds established in the memory of a couple of deceased former teachers who meant a lot to me. That makes the donation much more personal and meaningful for me, and I plan to contnue those sorts of donations. I went to a catholic HS and their yearly fund drives are very important. If I donate to my university in the future, it would likely be directly to the athletic department. Chisoxfn Posted October 25, 2008 Share Posted October 25, 2008 I go back to events at my school quite often and try to talk to people about careers in the industry so I consider that a pretty good way of giving back, but I definitely plan on donating to my alma mater in the future. I loved my experience there and the combo of cost and education couldn't be beat. I got a job at a top firm and really received a tremendous education and I'm very proud that I graduated from there. I also support my United way because I am very close to them and the organizations they support. I also give a nice contribution to the Boy Scouts each year.
