sircaffey
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 02:30 PM) If the Sox trade Dye, I would be a major proponent of signing Bobby Abreu to a 2 year deal. Abreu has a nice left handed stroke and his numbers were partially aided by the short porch in Yankee stadium, but he'll get on base a lot and still has some speed (22 stolen bases). I also recall him having a good relationship with Ozzie Guillen and Ken Williams has often been linked to him. I also have absolutely zero idea what he's looking for in terms of a contract, but I'd give him good money. I'm with you there. I've liked the idea of Abreu for a while now. If you could get him on a 2 year deal, I'd be all over it. Though, I bet he's looking for a 3 year deal.

Chisoxfn
QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 12:36 PM) He wants 3 yr, 48 mil Thats a little steep, but I still wouldn't have a problem because I Think your better off overpaying and getting less years. He should still have at least two above average years left in him and one average year. I'd prefer a 2yr deal with an option and I'd imagine he might settle at 3/36. He's a downgrade from Dye, but if the Sox are potentially shopping Thome (which has been hinted at, although I honestly don't know where he'd accept a trade to) than Abreu would be a sweet pick-up to be the lefty bat that replaces Thome and than if Dye is moved as well you'd have Q in right and Abreu in left. I'd hope the Sox would have been able to get a couple A type prospects for Thome/Dye combined (one being a CF and one being a pitcher) and than maybe the Sox consider signing Derek Lowe to replace a traded Javier Vazquez. Lowe is probably repped by Boras though, but if you could again get a shorter term deal it would be well worth it.
Kenny Hates Prospects
No way I'd give that much money to Abreu. I think if we go for a big lefty bat we need to be looking at Jim Thome's replacement for 2010. Raul Ibanez might be a cheaper option and with Quentin sliding to RF, I think he could be OK in LF for a year until we move him to DH. Or, if we're going to be spending big money, go get Adam Dunn. Put him in left for a year and then make him the DH. Dye and Konerko are future DH candidates, but I like the idea of a lefty stick there since big bat lefties are harder to find. Also I don't see either Konerko or Dye as being part of this team after 2010, and I think there's a pretty good chance one of them is gone before this year ends. Chisoxfn
I understand going after Dunn if you lose a lot of sluggers, but last I checked Ken Williams wants to diversify the team and try to pick up a few more complete baseball players and Adam Dunn is the epitome of a one dimensional ball-player. He'd be a great fit on certain teams but in the current mold of the White Sox I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole. Would I take him over Jim Thome, absolutely (due primarily to age) but the Sox need to get some other type of players and I'd much rather have Abreu for 2-3 years at 12M than Dunn for 5 years at 12-15 M (I have no idea what he's asking for). If the Sox move Thome/Konerko/Dye (all 3) than I'd be all about getting Dunn in as well as some other run producers. But Dunn should hit nowhere but the 5 spot in a lineup. caulfield12
No to Dunn, no to Abreu, not at the prices and amount of years they're going to be asking for. I would rather have Abreu than Dunn, simply because he still has some tools (but not like 3-5 seasons ago) and he'd give our line-up some diversity and a little more athleticism...but it's not worth in the vicinity of $15 million per season. I'd rather have Ryan Sweeney in RF at the league minimum and invest that money into other areas (CF, 3B, 2B, 5th starter, bullpen) than give 30-something/declining Abreu 3 years at that type of salary. Kalapse
FWIW Bobby Abreu - much like Jermaine - ranked near or at the bottom amongst all RF in most fielding metrics last season and his reputation tends to back this up.
caulfield12
Which brings us back to the hilarity of Nate McLouth being in consideration for Gold Gloves when a majority of fielding metrics/matrices have him in the 2-3 worst CFers in the game. That award is as much for offense as defense. I just give voters credit for not giving it to JD simply due to his offensive numbers over the last 3-4 seasons.
