Soxy
I'm going out to dinner with my boss/mentor tomorrow and possibly some others in my field. As the girl from Chicago I'll probably be asked to pick the place or have some suggestions. But I haven't lived in the area for nigh on a decade. The conference is at the Hilton on North Michigan. Anyone have any suggestions for places within walking distance. My boss hates pizza so that's out. Thanks in advance.

Texsox
QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 10:21 PM) My boss hates pizza so that's out. That explains so much. What's the budget? How far do you want to travel? For a taste of Chicago, and since pizza is out, I'd be thinking either ribs or a steak. But that leave syou out so we need vegetarian as well. She's not a big red meat eater, but she really likes poultry. I was thinking the Italian Village, but I haven't been there in ages (and I think it's a ways off). Anyway, she likes Italian/Greek, Thai, Indian, Mexican.

Rockit - Actually has really good food, and it has a diverse middle aged business type crowd for dinner Heaven on Seven - Cajun Food Frontera Grill - Authentic Mexican (highly recommend) Theres a ton of great steakhouses but you're going to have a hard time getting out of any of those places for less than $40-50 a person. I'm sure they get requests like this all the time from business travelers, so they should have a good list of suggestions. (That's what I do when I'm traveling and have to set up a dinner.) LosMediasBlancas
That price range in that area won't get you much.

southsider2k5
QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 04:50 AM) That price range in that area won't get you much. ^^ That is the honest to god truth. It is so expensive to eat downtown anymore. You are pretty much into casual dining and just above fastfood dining at that price range anymore. You might want to try the Lettuce entertain you restaraunts. http://www.leye.com/restaurants/search?zip...1&submit=Go

There are a metric ton of good italian places downtown - call the Hilton concierge (as was noted earlier) to recommend one of those. There is a famous one that is excellent, just north of the NW corner of Millenium Park, right on Michigan Ave, and the name is escaping me. And for a tourist making their first or occasional trip to Chicago, atmosphere may tip the scales over quality of food. I can take you to an awesome Mexican feast in Reynosa, Tamps. Mexico about 30 minutes from my house. You will be scared to death, and I'll be a little nervous, but the food is amazing. Or I can take you to a really cool place, great service, great decor, and the food will be ehh, OK. Touristy stuff.

LosMediasBlancas
Find the Director of Catering and events at the Hilton. Explain to them that you are thinking about booking (wink-wink) an event there in 2010 and that your group would have evenings free and would probably hit the outlets (restaurant, bar etc.). If they're any good at their job, they'll hook you up at their fine dining restaurant. If you weren't with co workers, this would be a serious suggestion. I have played some of the best private golf courses in America by having my pro call the other pro and hooking me up because I was considering a move to their area. Some would bill me, most would not. They almost always found a member or members to include me. Best deal anywhere.
Soxy
We ended up going to the 11 City Diner which was right in the price range and good food. It was rather cute, we were in like the 1100 South Block of Wabash and my advisor asks me during dinner, so are we on the Southside of Chicago that I hear so much about (including asking about the housing projects)? To my credit I managed not to laugh, but say, no we weren't really on the southSOUTHside yet.
