flavum
With 33 players on the 40-man, the Sox have some room to add players next week. Anyone know who in the Sox organization has to be added or be exposed to the Rule 5 draft next month?
NorthSideSox72
I'm hoping for David Cook to be protected. But I think I'll be disappointed.
Ozzie Ball
I believe Brandon Allen needs to be protected.
NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 11:42 AM) I believe Brandon Allen needs to be protected. If he does, then that should be a no-brainer.
ChiSox_Sonix
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) If he does, then that should be a no-brainer. I initially thought it was a no-brainer also, but is there actually a chance some team will sign him with less than a half year of AA experience and leave him in the majors all year? Some team like the Marlins or Nationals might do it. I wouldn't take the chance, unless we've got something better that needs protecting. With his K numbers, he might strike out 250 times at the major league level if he played a full year.
ThunderBolt
Macdougal was just outrighted to Charlotte. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i belive that's another one bites the dust off the 40.

Guess no one wanted to pay him the rest of that contract. Heh, I guess we weren't getting anything in trade for him then. He could still elect not to take the outright, and go out as a free agent, right? My question is, if he does decline the assignment, is his contract null and void? Or does a signing team get his current contract?

scenario
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) Macdougal was just outrighted to Charlotte. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i belive that's another one bites the dust off the 40. Correct. That reduces the number of players on the roster to 32. 32! Pretty interesting. Makes me wonder which 8 players fill the slots. Official release. Edited November 14, 2008 by scenario
scenario
My guess is that Mac cleared waivers without anyone claiming him, so they outrighted him to Charlotte rather than releasing him (and eating the contract). All of which leads me to believe he will be traded pretty soon.

That. Either he's in Charlotte, or more likely, he declines the assignment and someone else signs him.

I think he'll be part of a deal, not a stand alone trade. Besides, people clear waivers all the time and still get traded.
Kalapse
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 03:54 PM) Heh, I guess we weren't getting anything in trade for him then. He could still elect not to take the outright, and go out as a free agent, right? My question is, if he does decline the assignment, is his contract null and void? Or does a signing team get his current contract? I believe the contract is null. He doesn't get a dime. D. Outright Assignment to Minor League club (1) Election of Free Agency-3-Year Player Any Player who has at least 3 years of Major League service and whose contract is assigned outright to a Minor League club may elect, in lieu of accepting such assignment, to become a free agent. In the event that such Player does not elect free agency in lieu of accepting such assignment, he may elect free agency between the end of the then current Major League season and the next following October 15, unless such Player is returned to a Major League roster prior to making such election. (2) Election of Free Agency-Second Outright Assignment Any Player whose contract is assigned outright to a Minor League club for the second time or any subsequent time in his career may elect, in lieu of accepting such assignment, to become a free agent. In the event that such Player does not elect free agency in lieu of accepting such assignment, he may elect free agency between the end of the then current Major League season and the next following October 15, unless such Player is returned to a Major League roster prior to making such election. (3) Effect of Free Agency Election A Player who becomes a free agent under this Section D shall immediately be eligible to negotiate and contract with any Club without any restrictions or qualifications. Such Player shall not be entitled to receive termination pay. Such a free agent shall receive transportation and travel expenses in the same manner as he would if he had been unconditionally released except he shall be limited to receiving travel expenses to his new club if he reports to it directly, provided such expenses are less than to his home city. southsider2k5
And he isn't about to leave over $2.5 millon on the table.
BearSox
I think if Mac can show some signs in ST or during the season at Charlotte, he can either be called back up to big league club if we need relief help, or be used in a trade for a team that really needs bullpen help. santo=dorf
I can't imagine how we could possibly trade him if he cleared waivers and no one grabbed him. They could wait to see him clear to see if the Sox will pay a significant part of that contract for a player. If a team put in a claim on him the Sox would've had them responsible for his guaranteed $3 million.

G&T
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) I believe the contract is null. He doesn't get a dime. The sentence prior to the one you highlighted is the operable phrase. The player is unencumbered and free to contract.
