Chisoxfn
Varitek is a good leader but the Sox have AJ and I don't see Varitek taking a backup job (plus there is the whole issue with them both being lefties). I do think a team could get lucky on Varitek with him rebounding to an extent but he's definitely on the downside of his career.
DaTank
Besides the fact that he wants to be a starter, he bats left-handed and would require at least 5-7 mil. per year. ( I read the Red Sox were going to offer or already did offer him 14 mil/2 years.) Of course nobody wants to pay that much for a backup catcher. Don't forget the part where he's done as a hitter, and people are stuck talking about his intangibles and game management. At this point, i'd reather have AJ and Cole. elrockinMT
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 06:51 PM) Discuss... Good way to keep yourself out of harms way when you start a topic and then let the posters figure out what to "discuss" Anyway Varitek? We need someone willing to play backup to AJ. Jason Varitek wants to be a starter and derves to be a starter
WilliamTell
I'd pass on him. We have AJ, plus Varitek is coming off a terrible offensive year. Do I think he'll be as bad as he was last year? No. But I think he's past his prime.
Sox It To Em
Varitek is terrible and his asking price is ridiculous. No thanks.

Kalapse
Varitek is a switch hitter who hit .284/.378/.484/.863 in 111 PA against lefties last season and .284/.362/.468/.830 for his career. If his name wasn't Jason Varitek and not represented by Boras then it would make perfect sense, he'd be the ideal backup catcher to AJ.
