smalls2598
Per ESPN Pujols beats out Howard for NL MVP award Associated Press NEW YORK -- St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has won his second National League Most Valuable Player award. Pujols won by a comfortable margin over Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard. Milwaukee's Ryan Braun was third and Los Angeles outfielder Manny Ramirez came in fourth after playing just two months with the Dodgers. Pujols hit .357 with 37 home runs and 116 RBIs despite playing much of the season with a sore right elbow. The Cardinals finished fourth in the NL Central. Pujols got 18 of the 32 first-place votes. He also won the award in 2005.
lostfan
Ramirez didn't even play half a season in the NL, how could he get votes for the NL MVP?

Steve9347
Hmmm, a few years ago Pujols complained that someone won the award over him despite their team missing the playoffs. I wonder if his opinion's changed now.
Kalapse
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) Hmmm, a few years ago Pujols complained that someone won the award over him despite their team missing the playoffs. I wonder if his opinion's changed now. Albert was asked a few weeks ago who he'd give the MVP to, he said that since his team didn't make the playoffs he would give it to Howard. Pujols was 100% deserving, I don't give a s*** what his team did he was by FAR the best player in baseball this season.

MHizzle85
QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) Ramirez didn't even play half a season in the NL, how could he get votes for the NL MVP? The Dodgers don't even make the playoffs if it's not for Manny. Also, did you not see his stats from his time in LA?

whitesoxfan101
I'd be all for it they changed it from MVP to MOP. It's hard to argue with Pujols winning though, even with the fact the Cardinals didn't make the playoffs.
witesoxfan
I think it's worth noting that St. Louis won 86 games (which would have won the division in the West), and I would like to imagine that they are probably a 76 or fewer win team without Pujols. Well Pujols finished with a VORP right around 100 (by far the highest in the game, Hanley was 2nd at like 80) and typically 10 points in VORP = 1 win, so at least according to Value Over Replacement Player Pujols was worth about 10 extra wins to the Cardinals making them a 76 win team without him. I'd like to think it's more too because I strongly doubt Ludwick and probably Glaus as well (though the transition from AL to NL is a bit easier) have the years they do without Pujols in the lineup. Steve9347
Just so everyone knows, I was pointing out Pujols comments, not saying I agreed with them. He definitely was the best player in the NL and without him his team might have been the worst in baseball. Thusly he was deserving.
