NCsoxfan
Thoughts on trading for Bobby Crosby to play SS? I would assume he would come very cheaply....
harfman77
No thanks, I think Getz could probably equal the .237 AVG and .296 OBP that Crosby put up. He is not even worth McDougal.
NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 09:35 AM) No thanks, I think Getz could probably equal the .237 AVG and .296 OBP that Crosby put up. He is not even worth McDougal. I'd take him for MacDougal.
NCsoxfan
If healthy, and thats a BIG if, he can be a pretty good ballplayer
CWSOX45
I'd be afraid to deal with Beane. Crosby is always injured, and he's been a huge disappointment. With that in mind....stay away.
southsider2k5
Alexei is moving over to SS, so I don't see this as a need.
Hatchetman
I would take him as a backup to Alexei. Who is penciled in as backup, right now?
southsider2k5
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 09:59 AM) I would take him as a backup to Alexei. Who is penciled in as backup, right now? Wilson Betemit and Chris Getz
NCsoxfan
My point being a Crosby / Alexei combo may be better than an Alexei / Nix or Getz combo...
Hatchetman
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 10:16 AM) Wilson Betemit and Chris Getz Well, hopefully, Alexei can play 162 games.
NCsoxfan
Furthermore, if Getz & Nix disappoint then you can slide Ramirez back to 2B and have Crosby at SS. It might be worth a shot in spring training to see which combo is best
DBAHO
Crosby's making what $5M next season? Rather use that sort of money on someone better.
southsider2k5
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 10:19 AM) My point being a Crosby / Alexei combo may be better than an Alexei / Nix or Getz combo... He will get paid $5.25 million next year. I am not really intersted in spending that kind of money on a backup, when we have other holes that could be filled with that money. Hatchetman
Maybe we toss in a little MacDougal action to even things out? I'm not fired up about the idea, but we have to have somebody to play SS, should Alexei go on the DL for a month.
Kyyle23
I thought MacDougal was outrighted? If he isnt worth anything to the Sox, I dont think that he would be worth much to anyone else in trade value. So all this "toss in a Macdougal" talk doesnt make much sense to me
Hatchetman
The point is we don't HAVE to pay Crosby $5 mil, there are ways around it. Edited November 24, 2008 by Hatchetman

NCsoxfan
Why? You would rather go with an underachiever (Nix) and/or unproven player (Getz)? Hasn't KW had a history of buying low on players like this? Plus, wasn't Uribe making $5MM last year as a utility player? I'm not sure I follow your resistance... YASNY
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 11:50 AM) Why? You would rather go with an underachiever (Nix) and/or unproven player (Getz)? Yes, I'd rather go with an unproven player like Getz. How else can the Sox minor leaguers get the chance to prove themselves if they never get a shot? scenario
Crosby has proved (and left no doubt) that he can't hit major league pitching. Getz has outstanding plate discipline (more walks than strikeouts in his minor league career). And I checked his splits year by year and he hits lefties just as well as righties (a little better actually... sort of unusual for a lefty hitter). Meanwhile, Crosby is a career .222 hitter against lefties. So, I'm with YASNY... I'd take my chances with Getz first. In fact, I think he could be a good leadoff hitter for us. Speed, contact, and ability to take a walk... I think he might surprise people next year (in a good way that is). Another little interesting fact I found while browsing through his splits... he had 25 bunt base hits (in 37 at-bats) in the minors. Not a big deal, but gotta like that speed. For what you are going to get from you backup SS, which something like 20 starts, plus some more games off of the bench, why is that worth $5,000,000, plus the players we would have to give up to get him? Add to that the holes we already have at places like the leadoff spot and no back up catcher, and I don't think it is money really well spent. You wouldn't spend $5 million to back up Carlos Quentin would you? While an extreme example, it is the same line of thinking.
