Oh and I hate tipping when a bartender gets me a bottle of beer. Turning around and grabbing something is not worth a dollar. I usually just tip every other beer in that situation.

I tip big early on so the bartender remembers me when the bar is packed later on and i need a beer. Bartenders always can find you in the crowd when you tip well

True story. I almost never tip on anything later in the night. There are usually so many dollars on the bar anyways that they might just assumed I left one of them.

I dislike the idea of tipping and I wish the service industry paid a living wage that would make it unnecessary, but that's not the case. maybe it's a holdover from having worked in the service industry when i was younger, but I'm not going to take my frustration in the status quo out on the person waiting on me. I won't tip extravagantly unless service is outstanding, but I also won't really tip cheap unless the service was awful.

Sadly, service tends to be subpar in most places these days and Iwish that wasn't the case.

I agree throwing a guy a tip because he opened you a beer is insane, but if you don't do it, see how long you wait at the bar for service after stiffing the server the last couple rounds. My days of going out to the bars a couple times a week are long over, so when I do get a chance to go out I'm going to enjoy myself and tip the servers and not worry about the few bucks I'd still have in my pocket if I went cheap.

Now, here's where I seem to differ from most people. I think tipping your garbage guys and your mail carriers at Christmas is extreme and it's not something I do. If they had to walk up a long driveway every day to deliver the mail then maybe I could see doing it, but I feel that is unnecessary.

How do other people here feel about that?

And I will just throw this out there, but its almost never the drivers fault that your pizza is late.

Drivers know certain places that tip well and the ones that don't, and if you are in the ones that don't category don't expect a speedy delivery..

I just wanted to point out the irony in these two posts here...

What I think he is saying is that people develop reputations for being good or bad tippers, and the drivers respond accordingly.

I always delivered my food on time and a good portion of the time early(unless I came back and stuff was out of control and already late by the time I walked in the back door), but if I had a route of tickets in my hand, the guys who arent tipping go to the back of the list. Their food will be hot, but it wont be "just got out of the oven" hot.

Now, this is only me Im talking about. I knew plenty of drivers who were absolute jerks and didnt care, and they would let the food get cold. I never did that, but Im not gonna say it didnt happen

When I'm back in Chicago and working I am borderline overboard on tips, there's been nights where I've tipped the servicepeople more than I've spent at the establishment.

My philosophy is this: When I'm not saving up for my money to take down to college I make enough money at my job here where I can drop a good $250 in a night and get away with it. I usually have no intention of running up a bill that high so I tip everyone in the place like a madman the second I walk in. I get impeccable service, I wait a minute max for any drink. The people who work at these places talk to each other, and if the waiter gets $20 before he even takes your order you better believe he's gonna tell all his pals. It gets expensive, sure... but I really dont spend my money on anything else (no car and I despise retail consumerism) so I might as well have a great time spending it.

This changes when I go back to school and am poor as hell, I still tip but never over 20%. Service is never that great down here anyways, I dont expect it to be.

note- chicks totally dig it when you spend money like it's nothing (I know where that comes from), and it's a lot more fun for you and the people you're with when the entire staff tries to make all of you feel like royalty.

Haha, yeah they sound like they clash but I will explain..

When its legit busy, it can take up to 45 mins to an hour to get people their pizza.. when that happens, they want to act like I went out of my way to take forever to get them their food which isn't the case at all.. When I have to take three deliveries at once, its going to be a while before the third person gets their food.. Its not my fault, its just real busy and they aren't the only ones ordering a pizza..

Now when im working on like a Wednesday afternoon and the same non tipping address comes up and I have to take it, im not saying I sit around for an hour and then take it.. however, I will stop at the gas station and get an energy drink.. maybe I will take the long way there so I can listen to something on the radio.. maybe im hungry and I want to drive through McDonalds.. I will do other things first on my way there before going straight there

Yeah, the food is always hot even if it takes an hour and a half to get to its destination..

I have no idea how they would have let it get cold, the only way that can happen is by taking it out of the bag and letting it sit for a WHILE.. but I dont ever do that kind of stuff, and when I say they wont get a speedy delivery I just simply mean im not getting in my car and getting to their house as fast as I can.. Im in no hurry if its a familiar address that is known for not tipping..

We even type "No Tip" on the tickets so when they order in the future the driver can see right away not to expect anything..

Exactly. For everyone on here I see saying they dont tip bartenders or at least dont tip them well, those are the guys who are waiting 20 minutes to get their beers at crowded bars. If you tip big early, not only do you get fast service, youre likely to get a free round or free shots sometimes.

QUOTE (False Alarm @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 08:34 PM)
anyone ever paid for movers? i didn't know whether to tip them when i moved into my current house...

YES! Most movers get paid squat for the work that they do. If you have a major moving company like Atlas etc, then a smaller tip is enough, maybe a lunch/water or gatorade would be nice.

But I worked for Two Men and Truck and got paid $8 an hour for a ridiculously hard job. I can understand if you are not satisfied with the move, or are incapable of moving yourself yet have very little money (handicaps, elderly), but other than that you should tip, and say it when they arrive too, they will go faster and save you money if its by the hour.

So many times I hooked up people by not charging for extra work like large tvs, or letting them use the wardrobe boxes for free, and we always docked about 15-30 mins off the bill and told them so, since that would save them about 25-50 bucks, and we rarely saw any of that back. We were paid by the hour, so whatever we billed them was what we got paid, so when we try and be nice to these people and they dont tip it drives you nuts.

If you are satisfied with the work, in that they busted their arses off for the whole time while being courteous, this is a good frame to tip by:

>2 Hours- $10

2-4 hours - $20

4-6 Hours- $30

6

Trust me, when you say a good tip is on the line to these guys, they will save your money, its like a second wind. You'll see some guys running from the truck to your house/apartment, taking an extra box, docking off the bill. In the long run, its saves the customer money and makes the mover happy. (And screw the company, if they paid more than the movers wouldnt be doing this, they pull in so much money a day its crazy).

Are bars even like that anymore? I go out drinking a lot, and I have never had to wait 20 mins to get a beer..

Usually we have a waitress, and even when I do walk up to the bar it takes max 2 minutes..

And for the record, I have never seen ANYONE get a free round or free shots for tipping..

I think the long waits are at extremely popular places. I envision something like a dance club with s***ty techno music blaring.

And in regards to getting free rounds, that happens a lot in smaller bars.

Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.

Because you aren't doing it yourself?

I don't understand tipping someone who cuts your hair sometimes. If you get your hair done by appt and have a regular person who cuts your hair and you like their work, then by all means take care of them. If they work you in at the last minute, tip them. But if you go to a walk in place, why should that person expect a tip? I never understood tipping hotel maids. Cab drivers? Why, unless they do something specific to deserve one? Bathroom attendants? whatever - I can get my own towel

I don't tip hotel maids unless I do something completely trifling like leaving a condom on the bed (or worse) and don't/forget to clean it up. But I mean, I'm not giving money on top of what I'm already paying to stay there for someone to come in and give me clean towels and make my bed, that doesn't make any sense to me.

I also tip if I order room service, but I only do that in really nice hotels, like when I was on my honeymoon. I'm not ordering room service at a regular hotel.

I have gotten free rounds or shots at a lot of different places. If you take care of them, they take care of you.

Thats just being cheap, you obviously havent worked in the service industry. Let me edit and expand so you dont think im being an ass.

If you want to drink beer for free you should stay home. Otherwise you are paying for all the ammenities of a bar if you go there.

-The barback who keeps those beers cold and stocked, who keeps the bottles full and the bar clean

-the busbuy who clears your plates and fills your water

-the guy who cleans up after you in the bathroom

-the guys who clean the entire bar at night

-the staff that manages the supplies, food, drinks and overall bar business

-the general upkeep of the bar, including the heat, AC, windows, doors, music etc

If you dont feel like you need to give money to the people who complete some of that work for you and keep the bar you are at in good working condition, then honestly, please stay home.
