The question I have is who Vaz's money turns into? Hopefully it's like the C-Lee/Pods deal where we got a couple of extra pieces with the $$. Unfortunately, I think the money sits and gets wasted.

Draft for next year? Maybe take some fliers on guys with sign-ability issues?

The money saved on Swish and Javy is not going to sit and be wasted.

I hope but the "experts" (Rogers and Rosenthal) says the Sox are trimming payroll. Maybe I am misinterpreting this as next year's payroll is going to be significantly smaller when really it's that we are freeing money to go after players.

Trimming payroll is different than dumping Vazquez, Swisher, and Dye to get younger. I'm sure we'll free up a ton of money and use most of it in FA, then use the rest on draft picks.

Every team is trimming payroll including the yanks, but we arent going to drop ours to 60 million, you can bet on that.

More Details on the Trade:

In return for Vazquez and another yet undisclosed White Sox player, Chicago will receive three players. The South Siders were given a list of five players and allowed to choose three. They were most interested in infielder Brett Lillibridge and catcher Tyler Flowers.

From BP:

Charlie Morton, RHP, Triple-A Richmond (Braves)

Morton has long been an enigma in the Braves system—a player with the kind of scouting reports that should make him a top prospect, but whose performances were hampered by control lapses and some questions about his maturity. He started to turn the corner last year at Double-A, and he’s built on it so far in the International League, firing seven one-hit innings on Saturday to lower his ERA to 2.14 in six outings, while allowing just 20 hits in 33 2/3 innings. Morton can flash three plus pitches at times, with a 88-92 mph fastball that he can dial up to 94 when the occasion warrants, an excellent curveball, and a good changeup with tumbling action and deceptive arm action. With John Smoltz moving to the bullpen and Mike Hampton about as dependable as your average cable TV installer, Morton could be getting a look soon.

From BP:

Flowers had a career game on Friday night for the Pelicans, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, a double, a pair of home runs, and seven RBI in a 22-3 thrashing of Lynchburg. One of the more interesting prospects in the system, Flowers is an absolutely massive presence at the plate and behind it, standing at 6’4" and tipping the scales at somewhere around 250 pounds. His .259/.407/.427 line shows how great his strike zone control is, as he’s walked 58 times in 239 at-bats, and playing in one of the worst hitters parks around belies his power, for on the road he has seven home runs in 126 at-bats. The key to his future is his defense, and right now the chances of him staying behind the plate are right around 50/50.

Gotta like how his power numbers and production have come at a pitchers park.

The Braves provided a list of five players from which the White Sox could choose four. Chicago is believed to have the most interest in shortstop Brent Lillibridge and Minor League catcher Tyler Flowers, who was one of the most impressive offensive weapons in this year's Arizona Fall League.

So is it four players or three?

Interesting, it now sounds like the Sox are getting up to 4 players.

The Braves will also provide two more unidentified prospects. But contrary to earlier reports, Jo-Jo Reyes won't be included in the deal.

The math was already done in this thread. If the White Sox trade Dye, which they most likely will do, they will have cut over $40 million. There's no way they drop that much. Nobody would show up. They might drop the payroll about $10-15 million, I'd think.

We all know KW is far from being done dealing. That being said, Flowers is a pretty good prospect to get back, especially considering our lack of depth at catcher. Javy is incredibly underrated by a number of people here, but I'll hold off judgement until we know what the actual deal is.

You're the guy that called Justin Morneau the most overrated player in baseball. Period. Citing his poor September. Ignoring the fact he hit about .330 with runners on base in 2008. His poor September made you say he wasn't there when his team needed him most. Did you see Javy's last 4 starts including a playoff start? He's incredibly underrated? 16 1/3 innings, 26 hits, 25 runs. I suppose the 18 strikeouts is all that matters.

The one thing I do like about this trade is we can finally stop arguing about Javy.

So anyone have any ideas on where the hell Kenny is going with all these moves?

This is from a recent MILB.com article (also mentions Beckham and Poreda) about the AFL.

Tyler Flowers, Braves: Flowers very easily could have been one of the catchers on this list. Offensively, there's no doubt he belongs, living up to his advanced billing with his performance swinging the bat. The jury is still out with his defense. He's definitely improved; some scouts think he's just fine, others are on the fence, though most felt he'd catch well enough to be an offensive-minded backstop at the higher level

I think Rock is trying to cryptically tell us that he has heard more information on whats going down, but that he just is not at liberty to talk about it.

Almost as if the Sox already have some one that they want to sign with the money, but they needed to get the deals done first...

If a deal was that close, we'd would have whispers about it by now. There is no way to keep stuff like this on the quiet anymore. I don't think we are close with anyone, but I don't think any team is close to signing anyone now. Maybe KW is trying to get a bargain because there are some good FAs out there, but the money is not out to there to pay them all. Maybe he is is collecting money in a buyer's market.

I've read this whole thread through and I don't know what to make of it.

First, are we getting three players or four players?

If it is three, a Lillibridge-Morton-Flowers package is awesome. If we were allowed to choose four players then I can't see how some of these names would have been involved, unless the Sox are eating some salary or something. Lillibridge, Morton, Flowers AND MORE??? Wow, we'd be getting a lot there.

It appears Kenny may be getting more in dealing Javy than he gave up for Javy (Chris Young) so I like this a lot. Still want to see whether it is three or four, but Flowers and Morton is definitely fair for Javy IMO.

Watched some video on Morton before, just the MLB highlights, and it doesn't look like he gets it up there in the mid-90's at all but he showed off a nice curve + change combo.

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but I guess Flowers got busted for PED's in 2006. I really hope that his positive test results are from him taking some sort of supplement that he didn't realize was on the banned list.

If it's Lillibridge, Flowers, and Morton, that's a great deal. If it's Lillibridge, Flowers, Morton, and another player, damn this was a hell of a deal. As most people know, I have been in favor of keeping Vazquez, but when you practically get 4 for 1 (I don't count Boone, he was as good as gone), and 3 of those 4 are players like Lillibridge, Flowers, and Morton, that's a good ass deal.

Anyone ever think we might see a platoon of Getz and Lillibridge at 2B?

Also, Lillibridge's inclusion is kind of odd. How many MIF prospects do we need? Maybe some of the posters really aren't dreaming and we really are after Peavy? Or else we're after Roberts, or something. Or, as someone else suggested, the Sox plan to move Lillibridge to CF.

It will be very interesting to see how this shakes out.

was just coming here to post this after watching mortons highlights....his stuff is good...good curve, flashed a good change, and even threw a slider in there at 84...stuff and delivery wise reminded me alot of gavin but with less tail to the 2 seamer...looked like he was already throwing a cutter...from what i saw i liked this kid more than boone logan thats for damn sure
