Public Cheers for "Taxpayer's Field," Proponents Say

Huzzahs are being raised for a proposal by two New York lawmakers that Citibank share naming rights to the New York Mets' ballpark, according to the men who advanced the idea.

The park is known as "Citi Field" under a 20-year, $400 million deal between the Mets and the now-shaky bank. New York City Councilmembers Vincent Ignizio and James Oddo recently suggested changing the name to "Citi/Taxpayers Field," after the federal government agreed to a $300 billion "backstop" plan to keep the bank from going under.

The two Republicans represent Long Island districts and the stadium is in Queens. But the duo's proposal has garnered praise from citizens from all over, their spokesmen told ABCNews.com Monday.

As evidence, a spokesman for Oddo shared with ABCNews.com emails his boss had received from the public.

"I totally agree with your desire to deny Citicorp naming rights at the new stadium," reads one, claiming to be from a resident of Queens. "It might be more appropriate to rename it, 'Citizen's Field."

Ignizio's stand on the stadium's name "resonate[d] with me," read another email, purportedly from a New Yorker outside of the lawmaker's district.

"You could have stated that the stadium should be named 'Taxpayer Field' with no mention of 'Citi' in the name," the email read. "That would have not been unreasonable. . . in my opinion."

"People seem to get it, to understand," said a spokesman for Ignizio, who said the public response to his boss' idea was overwhelmingly positive.

A Citi spokesman said the company had no comment on the proposal.

In a statement, spokesman Stephen Silverstein said the naming deal with the Mets was a "very positive way to support our community" and connect with customers.

The New York Mets declined to comment.

I have seen the insides of the park. It is nicer than the Cell. (That's because it's brand spanking new.)

The only part of the park I did not see is the Jackie Robinson Rotunda. Which is going to be the main entrance when fans arrive. It's a gorgeous facility.

Similar layout to the Cell though. I went to a couple of Mets games this year, and you could see Citi looming over the outfield wall. It’s absolutely stunning, and Shea looks even crappier beside it.

Shea is such a piece of s***. If its possible, it has worse seats and sightlines than Wrigley. The "reserved" fenced in sections in the lower deck are retarded as well.

It’s appropriate that most Mets fans I’ve talked to aren’t even broken up over Shea closing. The nostalgia aspect is there, but the fact is, the stadium got progressively worse every year. The parking is terrible, the part of town is not ideal, and it just wasn’t a very nice place to watch a ballgame.

Just a brief update, I drove by Shea today and they appear to have torn half of it down with little fanfare. It’s more of a husk now, no seats, no real structural support by what was Left-Center field , the only thing that remains is a gigantic poster of Tom Seaver that graced the outside of the stadium, along with some of the light structures that they had by the entranceway. It’s really quite depressing that I’ve heard nothing about them actually beginning the process of tearing the damn thing down, but there it goes. As for Citi? Still looks awesome.
