RockRaines
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 02:11 PM) The talk is that it would be Marshall, Atkins, and another prospect. The talk where exactly? The Marlins asked for 2 pitching prospects from the Rays out of a group including Niemann and Wade Davis. The Cubs simply dont have that as the Marlins already took their top pitching prospect.

Dick Allen
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 02:11 PM) The Marlins already shed some salary, they dont need to trade Hermida anymore. Also, i'm pretty comfortable with their trading history to believe they wouldnt trade someone as coveted as him for that kind of crap. The Marlins get a revenue sharing check larger than their payroll. They don't NEED to trade anybody.

R.J.
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 08:28 PM) And every year at this point, about a quarter of the board goes stark raving mad, insisting the team is going cheap, won't compete, and we'll be a last place team, blah blah blah. Yet, we've only finished below 3rd place once in KW'd 8 season tenure. Patience. You make a great point and I completely agree with you, I really do, but I'm not looking to finish in third place. Not saying that's what you meant, just saying that that's not the bar we should look to set each year.

I think there is reason to have reasonable trust in KW, but he's nowhere near earned the status of complete trust under all circumstances. Not saying that's what you meant, just saying that that's not the bar we should look to set each year. The team needs to improve from last season, as it's almost impossible to imagine the Tigers being worse than they were last year, as well as the likely improvement of the Indians (with an actual closer). The Twins, for the first time in forever, didn't lose any main contributors, and Liriano should be stronger than he was last year. It's a very competitive division. Jerry please all I want for Christmas is for you to sell the Whitesox!! I am tired of seeing you eat up all the revenue and giving Kenny 0 to spend. Please Please Please! Put somebody who actually wants a team from the third largest city in the US and is willing to treat it that way. Spend money win championships! I really feel sorry for Kenny sometimes, it is not his fault!
fathom
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 09:20 PM) Are all the people pissed about the off-season so far the same ones asking for the team to be blown up for pretty much all of the 2007-2008 seasons? Not I. The only ones I wanted gone after last season were Vazquez and Thome. I wanted the Sox to look into trading Dye for a legit starting pitcher, and then move Quentin to RF and put Swisher in LF. I'm not pissed about this off-season yet for the record. I am a bit concerned at this point though, looking at our roster and moreso, the fact that it's questionable that we're willing to spend much to fill the holes on this team. We've spent a lot of money the last few years, but it feels like between that and the economy, we've almost ran out of it. Soxbadger
I cant believe that people are complaining about the Sox payroll. They were over 100mil last season and did not sell out every single game. Reinsdorf has opened his wallet the last few seasons (if you look before 2005 our payrolls were drastically lower) and its not exactly gotten the White Sox much farther. Its not about spending money, its about getting good players.
R.J.
I wouldn't say I'm pissed off about the offseason - I didn't expect to be in on guys like Sabathia or trading for Jake Peavy or even signing Frucal. But I would say that I'm worried by a lot of the news stories floating around. Maybe we look back in two months and say "man, those were some crazy news stories, haha!" Who knows. I think that the only thing we've learned in the last 2 weeks is a small peek at "the plan," and from what we know the plan doesn't include: - Spending money. - Acquiring top talent. - Free Agents. - Maintaining our payroll. Ok. Hmm. You can do that and still put out a competitive team. Hell, if you're really great at your job, you can do that and still win. But handing jobs to Jeff Marquez, Jerry Owens, and a revolving door of second basemen with no track records is just not a good sign when you want to defend a division. ThunderBolt
The success of teams like the A’s, Marlins, Braves, and our White Sox show that you don’t have to get the best player to succeed you just need to get the right ones. I’m not one to lose faith in Kenny this early. And I’m saying that as a guy who wanted him fired at the beginning of last year. Kenny has a plan, and while that plan may not involve a Dunn, a Furcal, or a Hudson it involves putting his team in the best option to win right now and in the future. It’s one thing to go balls out and try to win it all every year; it’s another thing to actually formulate a strategy for putting your team in the best position for years to come. I’m on record as saying that the team as presently structured can win at least 80, and compete for the division. You can quote me on that. Get used to it. every year it's the same thing around this time. We don't spend enough money or We don't make good trades or We traded the wrong prospect because we gave up our good players and got nothing in return or JR doesn't care about the team we won't win AGAIN until he sells it or and this is my favorite We trade to cut costs because JR won't spend money and KW could have gotten more in return for those players and we will finish in last. It's the same every off season. I can't wait for the four greatest words in the English language: pitchers and catchers report

My concern is that we haven't improved in any area from last year besides our farm system, and that won't help us compete in 2009. I'd potentially disagree with that. Viciedo could still contribute in 2009 at some point IMO, and may produce better than what Swisher did. Josh Fields IF healthy, could outproduce Crede / Uribe. And we've arugbly jettisoned 2 weak links in Swisher and Vazquez from the team. All depends on what KW does from here on out though.
