Rod Blagojevich officially facing federal corruption charges

He's pretty stupid. He was a guy who didn't want to be associated with the Daley machine, but still wanted to be corrupt. See what happens when you attempt to do things you own way? You end up in jail.

And yeah, he's pretty stupid to try to extort the Tribune, and take bribes for an empty senator seat for the president-elect. All in all, he's a dumbass. He was going to get locked up after he was out of office. These two things just sped up the process. What a n00b. The sad thing is, the senator seat selection is still his.

Apparently Dick Durbin is calling for a special election... So kick one corrupt gov out of office, and pardon the other one? Ummm OK.

Can you name anything done by Blago that would be worthy of a pardon, unlike the other one?

The irony in this is that he wanted to force people at the Trib to be fired (I'd imagine that's an impeachable offense) because they wanted him impeached. I know he did a lot of other things wrong and is going to spend many years in jail, but that especially stood out to me. It's a great day that Blago has been caught, but it's just another statement at how pathetic and embarassing our state's government is. I think it's almost impossible to fix at this point, they can't throw everybody in jail (although I really like Fitzgerald, and he might try and do just that).

Also, Fitzgerald said, it was expected that Blagojevich would soon sign into law a bill that would direct a percentage of casino revenue to the horse racing industry -- a bill supported by someone who contributed $100,000.

Im wondering how a bill like that even makes it to the governors desk? Does the mob just fax new legislation straight to Blago's office?

I get the impression that sort of thing happens quite constantly in our system of government...that people are signing off or voting on legislation that directly benefits people who also happen to be big contributors to their campaign.

I don't think either of them are worthy of s***. Break the public trust and go to jail. Being a public official should hold you to a higher standard, not a lower one. Ryan needs to serve his term.

It's also interesting that they seemed to stop a crime spree in progress here. A lot of the stuff he's being charged with was very recent, and had they not arrested Blago today, they could have got a lot more dirt on him. Then again, it's a good thing they stopped him before he did more stuff wrong and as governor, and they must they they have plenty of dirt on him as it is to get him in the clink for a while.

I will grant you those points, but without advocating personally for a pardon for Ryan...you do at least understand why a politician might want to make a statement by requesting one for him after his leaving-office death penalty commutations I hope.

Its nice and all, but the work he did in office shouldn't excuse his illegal activities. The first part was doing his job to the best of his ability, which is what we were paying him for after all. The illegal part, not so much.

No checks and balances. No voters. Nobody cares.

But I care, and please support me for my election as Alderman.

Your rhetorical question is inaccurate because Durbin is calling for a commutation of Ryan's sentence. Gov. Thompson, Republican, has been lobbying hard for Ryan's commutation vis-a-vis his law firm.

It seems that when the FBI called this morning to tell Blagojevic that he was going to be arrested, his response was "Is this a joke?"

He also, apparently, was arrested in (and showed up for arraignment in) a pair of skin tight spandex running pants.

I think this is a worthy time to repost Blagojevich's interview on the daily show.
