Now that 2008 is ending, what were your 5 favorite releases of the past year?

Mine:

1 Testament - The Formation of Damnation

2 Motorhead - Motorizer

3 Alice Cooper - Along Came A Spider

4 Death Angel - The Killing Season

5 The Cure - 4:13 Dream

A couple songs that I really liked from CDs that didn't make the cut:

Oasis - The Shock of the Lightning

Metallica - All Nightmare Long

There was an embarrassment of riches this year and lots to choose from. I'd say there were easily 15 to 20 albums that I really enjoyed this year.

Portishead - Third

Santogold - Santogold

Q-Tip - The Renaissance

Sigur Ros - Med Sur I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalust

Honorable Mentions:

Brian Wilson - That Lucky Old Sun

The Breeders - Mountain Battles

Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree

Nada Surf - Lucky

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

Everyone seemed to loved Portishead this year, me I just wasn't a huge fan;

In no particular order;

Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul (good return to form for them)

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

Bloc Party - Intimacy

Pryda - Evouh

The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

No Order:

Conor Oberst - S/T

Vampire Weekend - S/T

The Killers - Day & Age

Panic at the Disco - Pretty. Odd.

Alkaline Trio - Agony & Irony

Apparently only self-titled albums and albums with ampersands and periods pleased me this year haha

My top 5 for 08 off the top of my head, in random order besides Q-Tip's. The only reason the rest are random is because there are a couple that were released recently and sometimes the longer I listen to an album the more I like it. I hope I didn't forget any...

Q-Tip- Renaissance

People Under the Stairs - FunDMC

Ludacris - Theater of the Mind

Lil Wayne - Carter 3

Rick Ross - Trilla

Honorable Mention:

The Cool Kids - The Bake Sale

The only reason it wasn't in the top 5 and would've been in the top 2 is because most of the songs were already independently released, but this was their first official release. To anyone who is a fan of hip hop and never heard any of Cool Kids' music this is a great album. You have to be a fan of old school hip hop though.

Disappointments of the Year:

Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreaks

Common's Universal Mind Control

This was a different year in music for me. I listened to a lot of older rock for example Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, etc.

Fall Out Boy - Folie a Deux

Pretty bad year for me, two of those albums aren't even full-lengths

1. Titus Andronicus - The Airing of Grievances

The only album from 2008 that I thought was greatness. It's up there with Sandanista!, New Day Rising, Pleased to Meet Me and The Body, The Blood, The Machine as my favorite punk albums ever.

2. The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

It's not Separation Sunday or Almost Killed Me, but still a damn good Hold Steady record.

3. Portishead - Third

Great comeback record for a pretty legendary band. This album is going to leave a huge mark on rap music, it already has started to.

4. Arms - Kids Aflame

There wasn't much to write home about this year so a thoroughly enjoyable album like this sneaks in.

5. M83 - Saturdays = Youth

<3 the 80's.

My top 20 is in the music thread if you care.

She & Him - Volume One

Coldplay - Viva la Vida

Beck - Modern Guilt

The Cure - 4:13 Dream

Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst

Not a studio album but it's from one of my favorite bands and it came out this year so it gets honorable mention...

The Clash - Live at Shea Stadium

Oh bollocks, Stay positive isn't anything great. AC's album is a defining pop music moment. It's going to place on the billboard charts on VINYL for christ's sake. And it's wonderful.

I'm really into the Hold Steady storyline and Stay Positive tied up quite a few loose ends. It's the first THS album where Holly isn't the main character, they focus a lot of Charlemagne's college girlfriend.

I would put Stay Postive ahead of BAGIA and behind Almost Killed Me and Separation Sunday.

I like AC, but not nearly as much as The Hold Steady.
