QUOTE (NIUSox @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 01:04 AM)
I'm not looking forward to black Friday. Last year was horrendous. I worked a double at my job (9pm Thursday-6am Friday and then 1pm Friday-10pm Friday) Don't know if I want to do that again this year. I seriously have come to doubt the sanity of some of the people that come to shop at 2,3,4 in the morning in general, but especially the ones while who dragged their kids with them. Plus last year, I caught the flu or something that day and couldn't work Saturday and Sunday, so it wasn't like I go more hours than normal.

For two years, I worked Black Friday at Blockbuster in Gurnee. Others on this site can back me up and how bad that is. Imagine a Friday night amplified by 1 million times the complaints.

I've had that experience working at Blockbuster too.

This morning at around 830, someone walked into my apartment, popped the lock on the door to my room then walked in saw me sleeping and ran. I woke up when the lock popped to my room but didnt want to believe what was happening. Then i walked out after I heard him run. My other roommate woke up too and heard it all. Thank God i was there, otherwise he could've walked away with a ton of stuff. That was scary. All because my roommate forgot to lock the front door last night. Apparently he robbed somebody else in our building too.

Are there other ways of re-booting a computer in safe mode? My computer apparently got jacked up by a couple of Trojans and a Packed.Generic (no idea which one), and it would be relatively simple to get it into a legitimate working order again, except that I literally cannot get my msconfig.exe to open up. I've tried a couple different routes to try and get there, and still have struggled.

Still running Microsoft XP, and I'm thinking it's about time a new computer finds its way into my life.

There should be a point during startup where it allows you to hit a function key which gets you into safe mode. It may only flash on the screen briefly. It is often F1, F12 or F14, but it isn't consistent. Try to find which it is for your computer, and hit that repeatedly during startup if you cannot see the right "moment" to do so.

Also, did you try running the exe from a CMD window?

That happens way to often on and around campuses.

F8 is safe mode in XP.

Not always. I have a HP pavilion with XP preloaded and F12 was my safemode. I had to wait until the HP logo hit the screen and that was my trigger

OK, my younger brother still lives at home with our parents. My parents have no use for computers and no knowledge of them, but my brother wants to get the internet on our computer. Since my parents don't care about the internet, they have no desire to buy it, and my brother doesn't have money. My aunt lives directly next door to them and has wireless internet.

So, here's my question. How do you get a regular desktop computer to pick up a wireless signal? Can you even do it? There is definitely connectivity in my parents' house from my aunt's house, and she doesn't care.

Finance People:

Is there any demand for masters degrees in economics? (Would it be worth pursuing?)

Get an MBA before you do a Masters in Econ. Well unless you plan on pursuing teaching or something along those lines. But if you are looking for value added in the private sector and your going to get a major, get the MBA, by far the most broad and most beneficial compared to the others.

Yes, there is demand, but not as much as there is for a masters in Finance (at least, from what I see, being in the sector). Economics has a lower % in private work, higher in public work, relatively. Other way around for Finance. Pluses and minuses to each of those.

Of course, right now, neither one is in extremely HIGH demand. But finance and accounting are still pretty strong, because even with the financial industry reeling, companies still need more and more of those folks to keep up with all the new rules and risks.

Don't ever get a masters in accounting, unless you are a tax professional and in which case a masters in tax can be very valuable. For all other purposes, most worthless masters you could possibly get.

He just needs to be a wireless adapter which will pick up the signal. Get a USB one for 20 or 30 bucks, plug it in, follow the instructions, access the WIFI and your golden.

make sure your aunt gives him her password if she has locked her signal. I bought my wireless adapter for 30 bucks and havent had any problems

Wait, I just started looking them up, and they all seem to be chips of some kind. Are these chips supposed to be connected to a router, because this computer doesn't have a router. It's just a monitor and tower.

this is what I have

http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.pro...oduct_Id=179211

It connects directly to your USB drive, you put a cd in your computer to program it, and program the password and you are off. No need for chips or anything else as long as you have a USB connection

Ha, I started doing more research into it, and that was the exact web page I found. I was coming back to Soxtalk to ask if it was the right kind to get. Thanks.

I said a masters in FINANCE, which will often involve working in accounting, but still give you flexibility. Not a masters IN accounting, which I agree is too narrow.

So, I've got a ton of weddings coming up. People who are in their upper twenties and lived on their own for the past 5-7 years. Or lived with their future spouse. And I know this will sound petty, but do people in that age range really need engagement parties, showers AND then gifts at the wedding? Seriously? How many sets of dishes do you need? How many linen table cloths? How many board games and vacuum bags? I understand the whole wedding shower thing from when people were moving straight from their parents into their own household, but now? When I have friends that buy a house, have a house warming party, then get engaged, have an engagement party, a shower, and then a wedding. Come on. That's just f***ing greedy.

However, I don't mind baby showers.

Sorry, rant over.
