Mac gone from Mac, Jurko and Harry

Dan McNeil's tempestuous run at WMVP-AM 1000 came to an abrupt, uncharacteristically quiet end after his Friday afternoon broadcast, the station confirmed.

Sources say that no particular incident precipitated WMVP's decision not to pick up the option on the final year of McNeil's contract, reportedly worth more than $600,000 annually, but the cumulative effect of past run-ins, self-inflicted controversy and suspensions could have played a role in his departure.

McNeil is under contract to WMVP into May but will remain off the air.

Replacing him alongside John Jurkovic and Harry Teinowitz for the foreseeable future will be Carmen DeFalco, who has had a variety of roles at the station, including backing up McNeil.

That's the jist of the article. This sucks major. I love ESPN so much over the Score, but this hurts. First, they took away Carmen and Silvy, which was a tremendous mix (even though I really like Waddel and Silvy) and now they take away Mac from Jurko and Harry. I love Carmen, but he isn't a strong enough personality to take Mac's seat. This bums me out. When I come home from school on my breaks, I always have my radio by me in my house listening to MJH. Gotta let the guy have a final farewell; he helped revive that station and it is a shame they are giving such a shaft.

That's a shame. I always liked him the most on that show. He wasn't afraid to criticize station management on-air so maybe they just had enough.

And recently he ripped off the hand that feeds him. Im not surprised at all after reading what he had to say about Mike and Mike garnering the best ratings and all that stuff, he blasted them

you know, i was listening when they talked about mike and mike that day and i didn't think what they said was insulting to mike and mike and/or really even negative. i say this as a mike and mike fan.

and i did generally agree with their point. chicago's morning radio ratings shouldn't be won by a national show, imho.

the point was valid, but ESPN doesnt take too kindly to that sort of thing, which is why I am not surprised.

ESPN1000 has really been mismanaged in the past 4 years, no doubt

I wouldn't be surprised if his salary was a major factor in this. Sponsorship is down all over radio cuz of the economy. If they aren't bringing money in to pay him, they can't keep him under contract at that much money.

It sucks because like maggs said, Carmen is a good young on air talent, but Mac has the personality and knowledge of a lot of things outside of sports that made him likable and a ratings winner.

I wonder if Mac even planned on re-signing in a year after his option year would have been up. I would guess maybe not, and the station decided to send him packing a year early and save the 600 grand in this economy. MJH is the bellcow of that station, so this move is obviously a huge risk especially with B&B on down the dial at the same time, but Carmen is pretty good and they still have Jurko and Harry. I would have to imagine Carmen (who is a Sox fan right?) will keep the gig long term, as he's the best they've got and can balance out the Cubbie BS of Jurko and Harry. I wonder where Mac will end up. I HATE the Hampton and Holmes show, and I would love to see Mac end up taking that slot. However, I question if he'd ever go back to the Score, and especially for a show only 2 hours long.

its too bad, i kinda liked mac...but adding carmen is an upgrade...MJH is an entertainment show before sports show it seems to me and i dont think mac offered anything in the way of sports analysis that will be missed...even though he's a cub fan, i like teiney the best of anyone on that show, and i am also a huge defalco fan...maybe mac should go to the score and take over for dan hampton...for as good of a D lineman as he was, hes that bad at radio

If he wants to stay in the Chicago market, really what other options does he have?

Hampton and Holmes is brutal, and only because of Hampton. The man is just not cut out for the job. Maybe they need to put him in with the other old Bears O'Bradovich and Buffone, because when it comes to other sports he is just out of his element

Do any of you guys like Boers and Bernstein? They've always seemed like idiots to me and pretty much just laugh at their own inside jokes most of the air time.

I think they are hysterical, but to each their own. I get most of their inside jokes though, because i listen to them a lot

You don't dump Murph, you move Lawrence and Holmes after B&B, or can that act alltogether. How Goff or Abbatacola didn't get that slot in the first place is beyond me. Adding him to M&H in the mornings might sound good too. MJH was the one last thing that had me checking AM1000 out, and now I have no need to tune in, ever. Not one program on the station interests me anymore, save for the once a week Chet/Bruce baseball show. Mike&Mike 6-12, Tirico/Van Pelt (probably the best of their offerings) 12-2, a headless chicken 2-6... Even God Boy weeknights/early morning is more inciteful/easy to listen to than the most annoying voice ever/lol that he has his own sports talk show Jayson Smith. That s***show is all kinds of horrid.

I'd say add him to B&B but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Score needs to pounce on this though... And add Jim Rome too!

If WSCR is smart, you dump Murph and move to snag Mac and pair him with someone. Maybe move the lineup around a bit.

Murph draws good ratings (he's a dumbass Cub fan, but Chicago has many of them) and doesn't make a terribly high salary if I remember correctly, so he's not going anywhere. The Score should just can Hampton and Holmes show and make room for Danny Mac.
