whitesoxfan101
This isn't me trying to start an argument, but how can anybody like Barry Bonds? I'm legitimately curious as to the reasons, because I can't think of any.

There are so many guys who don't get enough blame for what they did, even guys like McGwire and Clemens who you hear about a lot aren't given enough heat in my opinion. But there is a reason his stats make your eyes pop out of your head, because they were significantly enhanced. SoxFan1
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 23, 2009 -> 03:02 PM) Apparently a lot of people hate Carlos Mencia, so I'll toss him into this thread cuz I like him I used to like him as well. His older stand up was phenomenal, and anything with the retarded voice was great. Too many questions over stolen jokes and stuff for my taste. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 23, 2009 -> 03:03 PM) This isn't me trying to start an argument, but how can anybody like Barry Bonds? I'm legitimately curious as to the reasons, because I can't think of any. I respect what he did, even before any of the steroid accusations. He's an incredible baseball player who showed uncanny strike zone ability and is quite possibly the epitome (in his prime) of a 5 tool player. He really enthralled me in his home run chase with his majestic bombs. IMO, he's the greatest hitter of all time. He did something that McGwire and Sosa couldn't do for me. His 756th home run was something I will never forget and something I was proud to see happen.

SoxFan1
Steroids don't improve your vision and make you judge the strike zone better. Steroids don't improve the likelihood of you making contact with a baseball.

Well if you're a great contact hitter already you're typical fly outs become HRs 20 rows deep.

Had Barry Bonds retired in 1999, I would probably be a big fan of his. What he did before all of the craziness of the 2000's was absolutely outstanding, and he would have been a hall of famer had he never met Victor Conte. I just think it's a shame he did. He's the ONLY steroid-related player I would vote for. I hate him for what he did in the 2000's, but he'd have been a hall of famer no doubt had he never touched the stuff, and he's the only guy I can for sure say that about. He obviously would have never hit 73 home runs or broke the all time home run record, but he'd still be a guy with 600 something home runs in all likelihood to go with all of the walks, steals, gold gloves, and MVP's. He cheated himself using the stuff because he didn't need it.

Of course he was on steroids....but he still was a man amongst boys who also were taking PEDs. He's also the only player of the last 10 years that I'd go out of my way to watch bat when flipping channels. I'm no NBA fan, but, zero doubt in my mind that Jordan was more dominant in his sport than any, in any other major sport, in the past few decades. Simply put, Bonds didn't change the game of baseball. Jordan sure as hell did.

How many times did Bonds get intentionally walked out of pure fear that he'd launch one? How many times did he get unintentionally intentionally walked when teams had to pitch around him. Jordan was similar, as teams really had to gameplan around him, and Bonds is quite similar.

Yeah I know, at that point Bonds was a leadoff hitter IIRC and Griffey was a #3 hitter. I'm just saying if Griffey's #'s had been steroid-inflated he would have these video game-esque OBPs that Bonds was putting up too.
