One of the main reasons is the long term damage that those drugs have been proven to do to humans vs Pot which has mostly medicinal and relaxation effects.

Im not talking anabolic steroids, the type of stuff Bonds etc are taking are not going to cause death etc, the side effects are limited.

Are there any risks to taking human growth hormone if you don't need it?

Taking human growth hormone can cause a number of side effects, including:

* Swelling in your arms and legs

* Arthritis-like symptoms

* Carpal tunnel symptoms

* Headaches

* Bloating

* Muscle pain

* Diabetes

* Abnormal growth of bones and internal organs

* Hardening of the arteries

* High blood pressure

That case is going to be a joke.

How can they prove that in that picture it was actually Marijuana and the location?

Just because he admitted to using Marijuana does not mean that picture is actually him using Marijuana.

Just another case of a govt official trying to become famous on crap.

Those are some pretty serious side effects IMO. Do they have any long term studies on the effect of HGH?

Im just saying Marijuana doesnt really have any adverse health effect other than maybe some weight gain.

And also, possession of weed under an ounce is basically a fine and a slap on the wrist.

You probably will not find a larger proponent for Marijuana legalization than myself, but I just dont think its a good argument to get into "What adverse health effects are."

I think that Marijuana probably has some negative impact on certain people, and I think if you try and focus on "Marijuana doesnt have any adverse effects" that eventually they will find some one who developed something bad, and use it as the proof to keep Marijuana illegal.

I think that the argument should be based on Cigarettes and Alcohol cause death, etc. Anything that is less harmful than those 2, which has more benefit than those 2, should be legal.

To me its a really simple equation.

Thats a good point. And they tried to study long term effects to link it to lung cancer like cigarettes at one point, then the scientist discovered there was no correlation at all which totally derailed that movement.

Olympic hero Michael Phelps was suspended from competitive swimming for three months on Thursday -- just hours after one of his sponsors announced it would not renew his contract after a photo surfaced of him smoking from a bong.

USA Swimming, the nation's governing body for competitive swimming, said it was withdrawing financial support for Phelps and barring him from competition during the period of his "reprimand."

"This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming-member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero," they said in a statement.

"Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust," the statement continued.

Earlier Thursday, Kellogg Co. said it will not renew Phelps' advertising contract.

"Michael's most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg," company spokeswoman Susanne Norwitz said. "His contract expires at the end of February, and we have made a decision not to extend his contract."

A few thoughts:

Smoking pot doesn't mean he's a stupid person, but doing it at a party with other people around was poor judgment. From what I hear, he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so it's not too surprising.

Also, as a former pot smoker, I never met anyone who was a casual smoker and took bong hits. If you're doing bong hits, you're not a novice.

Last, Kellogs dropped him as a sponsor. The company that sells what is basically sugar in a box and passes it off as cereal. Oh, the irony.

Ive done it maybe 4 times in my life, and twice it was bong hits. So dont know where you make that sound like such a fact.

Really? That's kinda funny.

My experience is that most people start off slowly with one hitters or slight drags from joints and gradually move up to pipes and bongs and blunts and other gadgets.

Then the argument could be on marijuana being illegal, cigarettes and alcohol should be illegal as well. Same logic.You want to use one to jude the other, than you would have to accept either situation.

I think overall, he's absolutely accurate. IMO it starts with joints, then pipes/pieces, then bongs, then the hardcore s*** like vaporizers.

Exactly, just like you don't drink a bottle of Tequila the first time you try alcohol and you don't shoot a speed ball into your neck the first time you try drugs. Phelps is a stoner and probably has been for a while.

It is amazing that pics had not come out sooner. That would be the one piece of evidence I would struggle with in declaring him a big time stoner. Not saying he isn't, but the fact that somehow it stayed out of the papers this long is amazing. He's got some really loyal friends, or they were too stoned to realize how much that pic would have been worth to the tabloids. :lolhitting

this isn't necessarily true...i doubt the bong is actually his...the most casual pot smokers dont buy pot and just smoke with their friends on occasion out of whatever their friends are smoking from...for instance he could have been at a party...some of his friends say, hey do you want to hit this? whats he supposed to do, say oh no im a lightweight, can you put it in a one hitter for me

Michael Phelps for NORML

Hi, I'm MP, people ask me all the time, how could you swim all those laps in preparation for the Olympics, wasn't it boring? Well of course it was f***ing boring. I was bored out of my f***ing skull and thought many times to quit, that's when Ricky Williams taught me about pot! It changed my life and it can change yours!

People will smoke out of whatever is available. The hardcore smokers used to love getting novices or first timers ripped off of bongs.

What you describe is possibly and we'll never know for sure. I guess it comes down to what you want to believe about the guy when you see that photo. I certainly don't look at it and think, gee maybe the bong belonged to is grandmother who smokes it for her glaucoma, or maybe it was only his third time smoking. Call me crazy, but I see a guy with his face in a bong and I think he's a f***ing stoner.

The local sheriff actually appears to be putting in the effort to assemble a solid case against Mr. Phelps.

Now it appears the case has expanded beyond Phelps' activities.

The party took place in November at a house on Blossom Street near Five Points.

It was at that house where someone snapped the photo of Phelps taking a hit on a marijuana pipe called a bong.

(Sheriff Leon) Lott says the picture indicated a law was being broken in his jurisdiction. He said he couldn't ignore the violation just because Phelps is rich and famous.

We've now learned that since investigators began trying to build a case, they've made eight arrests: seven for drug possession and one for distribution. These are arrests that resulted as the sheriff's department served search warrants.

We've also learned that the department has located and confiscated that bong.

Sources say the owner of the bong was trying to sell it on eBay for as much as $100,000.

The owner, who wasn't even at the party, is one of the eight now charged.

Phelps is not one of those charged at this point, but the sheriff's department has strong evidence that matches the photo to the house on Blossom Street.

That house is in the city, but the Columbia Police Department decided not to initiate or take an active role in the investigation.
