The ball was a liner to center field, but the outfielders were shifted hard to the right. Mulvey was part of that horrible Johan Santana package. Deolis Guerra has a 5.49 ERA in AA, Humber has been DFA twice and went unclaimed, and Carlos Gomez is complete trash except against the Sox. That wasn't considered too much money then. Coming off his injury, I'd still say it was. No one other than the Cubs was interested in him IIRC, and even then they only were willing to offer 2 years. The Tigers at the time were, IIRC, trying to buy their way back to respectability after that season where the only team they won any games against was the White Sox.
