Balta1701
Didn't he deal with an arm injury around the time the Twins grabbed him in the rule 5?
joejoesox
from another forum i visit This was yesterday: Quote: Johan Santana was scratched from his planned outing in Friday's exhibition due to some elbow stiffness. Santana said he experiences tightness in the elbow annually. He thinks it might have happened now because he's been throwing more than usual in an effort to show the Mets that his surgically repaired knee is sound. He'll likely throw a bullpen Sunday and start a game in the middle of next week. This is today: Quote: UPDATE, 9:51 a.m.: Big news from Mets camp. Johan Santana is out “indefinitely” with a sore elbow. That is ominous news. The word "elbow" is probably the last thing you wanna hear regarding your $137mil pitcher. lostfan
Oh, that would suck so much. Long contracts for pitchers are a bad idea... even for Johan Santana.
Kyyle23
Wait, is that "Out indefinitely" status as of today? Yesterday they were reporting all was good and he had a bullpen session with no issues
Steve9347
As of yesterday... Johan Santana (elbow) felt well enough Sunday that he changed his mind about going to New York for an examination on Monday. We wouldn't want to leave Florida for NYC right now, either. Santana threw in the bullpen today, and while we don't have any quotes yet, it seems safe to assume that he was at least close to pain-free. Balta1701
Santana is seemingly going back and forth on this with NY's new pitching coach. He said the soreness is probably because their new pitching coach had him throwing too much, every other day since the start of camp. Their pitching coach, Warthen, responded by saying that he though Johan was pushing himself too hard because he wanted to be ready for the WBC. SoxFan562004
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 11:38 AM) Santana is seemingly going back and forth on this with NY's new pitching coach. He said the soreness is probably because their new pitching coach had him throwing too much, every other day since the start of camp. Their pitching coach, Warthen, responded by saying that he though Johan was pushing himself too hard because he wanted to be ready for the WBC. I thought the Mets and/or Santana already said he wasn't pitching in the WBC. (I can't remember which one, I think since Santana had some sort of procedure done in the offseason the Mets had a right to veto him playing in it.) Is he scheduled to play in it? If I'm the Mets he gets the MRI, too much of a risk
Balta1701
Mets pitching coach yesterday said Santana won't throw his first game for a couple weeks and will probably miss opening day. Santana fired back that he still wants to pitch opening day. Threw a bullpen session yesterday.
whitesoxfan101
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 07:45 AM) Oh, that would suck so much. Long contracts for pitchers are a bad idea... even for Johan Santana. ESPECIALLY for Santana. He's a small guy for a pitcher (6 feet tall and 200 pounds I believe) and he threw A LOT of innings in Minnesota, especially his last 4 or 5 years. With very few exceptions, pitchers arms only have so many bullets in them. You would think the Mets would have learned their lesson with dominant, small starting pitchers who threw a ton of innings after the way things worked out with Pedro Martinez (who, if I recall, was very good his first year in New York and has been a major letdown since), but not so much.
