I like that match up vs Utah for them a lot.

It's funny because we're complaining about Arizona but they have a very good chance of winning their first round match up.

Sure is. I hate the BCS school love. The tournament selection is just a complete joke again.

Sorry, statistics support that mid tier BCS teams are better than non's.

Yeah, and it was a bad, bad year for non BCS teams, but I think you could argue that a San Diego State and perhaps another team such as St. Mary's could have deserved a spot over an Arizona and/or Wisconsin. Although, I think Arizona will beat Utah and can give Wake Forest a game since the Deamon Deacons are so up and down. Michigan State's lack of consistency and Kansas' recent struggles make me tend to think Louisville has a nice road paved for them, but Wake Forest is a wild card here. They may not even make it to the sweet 16 to face Louisville due to their youth and lack of consistency/experience, but they could present Louisville problems if they do.

Arizona, you gotta be kidding me.

Why are you guys so shocked they made it? This proves once again how crucial November/December games are. They beat Kansas, SDSU and Gonzaga. That was obviously enough (along with quality conference wins). This is why college hoops is so wonderful. You want in the tourney? Beat somebody.

They also could not win a game away from home. If they missed the tourney, KU would have had the longest streak in the tourney in the road...stupid arizona.

True. I'm just saying it seems a lot of people can't fathom how they got in. All you have to do is look at their non-conference schedule and who they beat. Teams better start recognizing that it's not just about conference play anymore and schedule better.

Very true. Another thing to keep in mind is the definition of "the 34 best teams" when keeping in mind how the at large process works. To some people, especially when you get to the last couple/few at large teams, they just want to take the best team available. And to me, Arizona is better than Creighton, St. Mary's, San Diego State (who they beat by 13), and Penn State (who isn't in because of their awful OOC schedule)

I agree, I am sick of the "experts" screaming about teams left out. Arizona is in a power conference and got a great matchup with KU and took care of business. I will stand behind putting in a Big conference team over a smaller conference team.

What stats? BTW, I think Arizona should be in based on their resume. Too many good wins to leave them out imo. I really don't see them beating Utah though.

A couple people on TV used this line of reasoning yesterday, and I agree (this is Gary Parrish of CBS Sportsline):

-- Arizona --

RPI: 62

Record vs. top 50: 6-10

Record vs. top 100: 8-12

-- Creighton --

RPI: 40

Record vs. top 50: 2-2

Record vs. top 100: 9-5

The argument people are making for Arizona is that it "beat some people." Well, yeah. It's Arizona, a national brand and member of the Pac-10, which allows it to schedule in a way where there are plenty of opportunities to beat some people. So the Wildcats beat some people -- like Kansas, Washington, Gonzaga and UCLA. But they nearly lost twice as many top 50 games as they won, and they are 5-9 against other teams in this NCAA tournament field.

Meantime, Creighton was .500 against the top 50, 2-1 against other teams in this field. So it appears the only thing that hurt Creighton is that it didn't have as many opportunities as Arizona to beat some people, and if that's what kept Creighton out of the field then something is wrong with the process, because that's a little too BCS-ish for my tastes.

I think that's an incredibly important point. IMO the committee shouldn't be looking solely at the number of wins against quality opponents. I think you have to look at that number relative to the amount of people they were able to play. Otherwise the chips are stacked against a small school for simply being small. There's nothing they can do about it. And really, a team like Saint Mary's went on the road something like 13 times and won, so even when you're a small school and you beat good teams on their floor, it still doesn't guarantee you anything.

But we all know at the end of the day this tournament is about money. Obviously Arizona will bring in a lot of that.

If you are a small school and a lower level of opponents the entire season, your record must be stellar or you must win your conference to get in. Its pretty simple actually for them. On a whole, the 2nd place team in those small conferences barely match up with the 4th or 5th place team in major conferences, its just how it is.
