chiguy79
I think the point is that the Cubs were dumb to let Maddox wear Fergie's # which should have been retired, now they have an issue, the shame is that Fergie has to share his retired # rather than getting his own recognition and he will be overshadowed by Maddox, who never won his important games with the Cubs and for 99% of the country will be remembered as pitching the braves to numerous division championships. I can't wait till the Cubs immoralize ronny woo woo with something, perhaps a statue of him on the red line platform...
Stocking
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 23, 2009 -> 06:09 AM) That's ridiculous. If Mark Buerhle blows out his arm this year and wins 10 games, you wouldn't think its justified his 56 be retired if JR chose to do it? What about Harold Baines. His number was retired and he played 10 more years. He had only 2 full seasons with an OBP of .350 or higher at that point with the White Sox and had hit about 200 homers. Any team that wants to retire any number for any reason is justified IMO. The Miami Heat retired 23 in honor of Michael Jordan. He never played for them (but did make them some money). Mark blows out his arm and wins ten more games. No, i would not be in favor of retiring his number. I agree with Texsox that he needs a few more quality years as a whitesox. Harold didnt go on to play to play tens more years, hall of fame years at that, on one single team as Maddux did with the Braves. So if Carlos Lee goes on to hit 500+hrs and sox bring him back for one and a half years at the end of his career, we should reitire his number. How about Magglio. To each their own i guess. Greg Maddux was probably the best pitcher of his generation. He spent 9 years with the Cubs. He won a Cy Young with the Cubs. They are retiring his number. Your other scenerios do not compare. Get over it.

Maddux played 6.5 For the Cubs before he left. Very similair senerios if Maggs were to come back for 1.5 more.
santo=dorf
Here's another thought, does anyone really question Carlton Fisk having his number retired? His average season in a White Sox uniform: 16 hr 58 rbi .257 avg. .329 obp AJP's average season 15 hr 57 rbi .274 avg. .316 obp Fisk's number absolutely s/b retired, even though he only caught over 100 games in a season 6 times for the White Sox. AJ's will never be. What you do elsewhere matters. I also think it shows AJP is not appreciated enough by a lot of people. Different eras, stadiums, times of their respective careers, etc... Fisk was a 4 time all-star, 3 time silver slugger, and finished 3rd as a MVP candidate in 1983. Fisk's OPS+ in his full years with the Sox: 109 103 134 102 115 60 (sheesh, what happened in 1986? 102 136 134 97 AJ's: 90 94 83

If Maggs won an MVP with the White Sox, left, was the best player in baseball for 10 years or so, came back and had a couple of productive years and was a lock to be a first ballot HOFer, yes, I think 30 would be retired. Its nowhere near the same.

Y2HH
QUOTE (Stocking @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 04:32 AM) Perfect. I disagree but thank you for humoring me. If we retired all of these numbers from all of these players, we would soon have to move to triple-digit jerseys for the future generation...this is a lot of names in this thread now and the Sox have already retired quite a few numbers. This aside, numbers are not always retired only because of stats, but because of the persons contribution to the franchise as a whole. Lee and Maggs, for example, will not get their numbers retired by the Sox as they were basically marked by this franchise as the leaders of the softball station to station era we jettisoned in order to win the WS -- at least that's how I see it. 4 points
QUOTE (scenario @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 12:05 PM) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Yes! The 'other' #31... Ferguson Jenkins... Started more games than any pitcher in Cubs history He's their all-time strikeout leader He's 5th in wins (and most of the other players on the wins list are from a long long time ago) He's 4th all-time in shutouts (ditto on the list of players he's behind... like Mordecai Brown, Hippo Vaughn, etc.) And he's been inducted into the baseball HOF ('91). He is one of the best pitchers I have ever seen in Chicago... an absolute workhorse. I think the way the Cubs organization treated Fergie for so long illustrates how clueless their organization has been for most of the last 40 years. A lot of that was due to his pot bust in montreal. 4 points
QUOTE (JoeBatterz @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 07:57 PM) Have the Cubbies retired the jersey of Bruce Sutter who won the Cy Young award in 1979 before leaving for the Cardinals were he too won a World Series? Maybe the Nationals can retire the number of Pedro Martinez since he won the Cy Young award with the Expos before they traded him to the Red Sox. Seems a bit goofy to include Maddux when his greatest success was achieved with another team. Why would you want that reminder? Well we did retire Fisk`s number, and his better days were in Boston, we even put up a statue of the guy. If your Cub obsession requires you to post, please try and limit it to non hypocritical hysteria.
kwolf68
QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Mar 23, 2009 -> 03:22 AM) The Seaver comparison is ridiculous because he won exactly 100 games less in a Sox uni then Maddux did in a Cubs uni. Oh, but what a great 33 wins they were. Tom Seaver was and still is my all time favorite pitcher and the White Sox were and are my one and only team. When Tom Terrific made it to Chicago, it was truly a great day. That said, no...Seaver's number shouldn't be retired in Chicago. That's dumb...hear about the Heat or someone retiring Jordan's number? There is some real dumb s*** out there.
