Cleveland's 2009 starting rotation?

scenario

Recommended Posts

From the Plain Dealer today...

1. Cliff Lee

2. Fausto Carmona

3. Carl Pavano

4. Scott Lewis

5. Anthony Reyes

Pavano as #3?

A pitcher with 24 big league innings at #4?

And the inconsistent and injury prone Reyes at #5?

A little perspective... Clayton Richard has 2X as many innings in the major leagues as Lewis.

And this is the team 'experts' are picking to win our division?

Yup. And you can actually put a big fat ? on their entire starting staff. Cliff Lee's '08 screams fluke in so many ways. Not to mention he has never put together back-to-back quality seasons. You have no idea which Fausto Carmona you're getting. And, of course, that's one super suspect 3-5 they have going into the season.

As far as picking them to win the division, honestly, I can understand it. Their bullpen looks to be pretty solid with the additions of Joe Smith and Kerry Wood (of course, Wood would have to stay relatively healthy). And their offense, even without bounce-back years from Martinez and Hafner, looks to be the best in the division.

With the amount of holes the Indians have it's absurd how much of the benefit of the doubt they've gotten this offseason. Do people really think Lee's season is replicable? That Carmona's one good year wasn't a fluke? It's just weird the faith writers have in them.

They're actually short one reliever in their pen...the Japanese pitcher (Koboyashi or something like that) who was so good for them in the first half has been a disaster to the point where they had to shut him down and there are still big-time concerns about him this spring.

Sowers was once considered a pretty high level prospect. Zach Jackson didn't do well in ST, but Lewis was really solid last year....compare his stats with Clayton Richard, although hopefully we can manage not to overexpose CR by keeping him in the bullpen and not having him face line-ups 2 or 3 times in one game.

Westbrook should also be coming back at mid-season, and Laffey's in the picture. too. Haven't seen enough of Huff to make an informed decision about his abilities.

It could be a lot worse. Their offense and bullpen will make up a lot. Plus, it's not like you know if all their guys suck. It's just a question mark right now. Also, IP really shouldn't be part of the debate IMO. If you're good, you're good.

The middle of their order isnt as good with non-roid Hafner. And I dont think their pen is all that great either, they have their closer hopes resting on a guy who has been healthy one out of the last 10 seasons.
