greg775
Gavin's velocity is good, his curve still has tilt to it and his slider is still good. The bad, he is not throwing strikes early in the count where he can use his plus breaking pitch. His fastball while 92-93 is still straight so he gets hit Gavin needs to face our lineup in a simulated game to give him confidence. Of course, that might be the day we see the good Sox and Thome, Paulie, Dye each hit bombs and AJ gets four hits. This is a scary thread reading how a lot of you think Gavin doesn't have what it takes. We obviously need him.

Obviously we need someone with major league experience to be a third starter for us, yes. Saying we need Gavin is somewhat like saying the Washington Nationals need some of their starters. santo=dorf
And I speak of the intangibles, not what the f***ing stats show. He grew so much in the 2nd half of last season and I continue to say I'm not worried about Gavin. I will say that he needs to man the f*** up though. He crapped his pants in the playoffs ala Javy Vazquez, not John Danks. Aren't those the "intangibles?" It also helps that he was near the top in run support last season. Aren't those the "intangibles?" It also helps that he was near the top in run support last season. Gavin got THE best run support in the game last year. Last season in the AL 28 pitchers logged 180+ IP, Gavin Floyd got significantly more run support than the rest. Per 9 IP Gavin Floyd got 8.51 runs of support while the pitcher of record, #2 Mike Mussina got 7.82 and #16 John Danks got 6.51, two full runs less than Gavin. 1.) Floyd 8.51 2.) Mussina 7.82 3.) Garland 7.78 - 9.) Buehrle 7.00 10.) Vazquez 6.96 - 16.) Danks 6.51 - 24.) Byrd 6.00 - 28.) G. Smith 4.

Are you forgetting that?
StrangeSox
He was 2-2 with a 4.81 ERA in September. His ERA climbed every month last year except for July.

Are you forgetting that? From what I recall, he bombed at Minnesota and against Cleveland in the final series, but he pitched well in the make-up game against the Tigers. His postseason start was horrid.

His postseason start was horrid. 2 quality starts. The Sox were 3-3 in his six outings. His wost outings came against the Angels, Royals and Twins. He was real good at Yankee Stadium and in his final start vs the Tigers. He didn't face the Indians
witesoxfan
Just wondering if the Twins are worried about their starters too -Liriano is at 2-4, 5.75 ERA, not averaging 6 innings a start (and his peripherals are mediocre too) -Baker was at 6.83 going into the game today and he's now at 6.95 through 6 against Detroit. I have a feeling the Twins are gonna give those two more than 3 starts before finding someone else.
greg775
This is a scary thread. Entering the season the common perception was we had 3 good starters. Now I'm starting to think Gavin is another Gobble. Woe is our team if this is the case.

Greg Hibbard
FWIW, I put up a thread essentially giving Gavin props. I still don't understand how a guy can have a 7+ era for two months and then have a 1 era for the third. I'm also not sold that he's not the Rex Grossman of baseball, an extremely high variance headcase.

When your 4-seamer tops out at maybe 94, those balls are going to get hit very hard.
