White Sox's Chris Getz has fractured finger, DL possible

By Dave van Dyck

It was revealed before Sunday's White Sox game against the Blue Jays that second baseman Chris Getz has a fractured bone in the tip of his right middle finger and going on the disabled list is a possibility.

"We're going to wait for him to see how he reacts," manager Ozzie Guillen said. Getz not only has trouble throwing but gripping a bat.

The finger was broken during practice before Saturday's game, as Getz was practicing taking throws at second base. His place was taken Sunday for a second day by Brent Lillibridge.

Getz listed himself as day-to-day, but Guillen wasn't so sure. If Getz goes to the DL, the most likely callup would be Jayson Nix, who is rehabbing from a spring injury at Class AAA Charlotte, where he was 2-for-5 through Saturday.

Guillen said that last year's No. 1 draft choice, Gordon Beckham would not be called up, saying, "If you see Beckham in the big leagues, we're in trouble."

Hopefully Getz can play through it. The biggest concern with this is throwing the ball. I don't see how it should affect his bat or swing that much. Lou Gehrig played through numerous broken fingers, but as a first baseman, he rarely ever had to throw the ball.

I hope to see Getz play through it, but I can see how that can really affect him throwing the ball, and if that's the case, he'll have to go on the DL.

Ha!

BS, just ask PK how a broken finger can affect your batting.

I had same type of injury as Getz, and it takes a week to feel comfortable again when gripping the bat and throwing the ball. It's not even close to being the same type of injury that Konerko had. This is the type of thing which should heal quickly.

Yeah, it's the throwing part that I think would hold him back. As for gripping a bat, it might be uncomfortable, but that's something you can play through, I'd think. Plus, it's his bottom hand that has the broken finger.

Glad to hear it might not be a huge DL stint. Wouldn't Nix be all we'd be left with, who just had surgery? I dunno, to me it just seems this organization just doesn't think things through. Of course the leadoff role being as cloudy as it's BEEN for years now is enough to show that, I think.

Ha!

It will still affect his hitting until he heals.

Ha!

You don't know that. The tip of the middle finger on your bottom hand has not been ever proven to affect hitting. It might be uncomfortable to grip the bat at first, but is definitely something you could play through.

I know this is an unfair comparison considering Getz isn't 1/1000th of the player Gehrig was, but Lou Gehrig was able to play multiple broken fingers during his great streak of games played.

It'll probably be uncomfortable, but if Getz can handle a little pain, it shouldn't have a great impact on his bat. It's the throwing the ball part that will cause a lot of trouble becuase when you release it, the last part of your hand to leave the ball is the tip of your middle finger. And that is exactly where Getz's injury is.

That's a pretty wild reference.

Did you follow Lou's career? Just curious referencing a guy who played so long ago.

Do some research.

The fact of the matter is that everyone reacts differently to pain. What is to Lou Gherig is not to Chris Getz. Your logic assumes that the pain will stay in that very small area at the tip of his middle finger. While it might, it probably won't. Even something as small as a jammed finger has radiating pain. It wouldn't be out of this world for that injury, rather, the pain, to extend halfway down that finger, if not all the way. Especially if it is irritated in one way or another during the game, one way which almost definitely includes throwing a baseball, something he'll have to do frequently. If throwing was the only concern, I tend to think they wouldn't mention the DL. To rephrase, it isn't necessarily the injury that counts, it's how he reacts to pain.
