CNN.com-

Several buildings in downtown New York were cleared as a precaution Monday morning when a military 747 accompanied by two F-16's were spotted flying low over lower Manhattan. The culprit: part of the presidential fleet.

The maneuvers were part of a photo shoot, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. An Air Force spokesperson says the plane involved was one of the two used to transport the president, also known as VC-25.

Eyewitnesses said the plane was seen circling over the Upper New York Bay in the area of the Statue of Liberty. It then flew up the Hudson River. Building evacuations also took place across the Hudson River in Jersey City.

Officegoers in lower Manhattan may have been surprised by the display, but according to an Air Force spokeswoman, local officials were not: both the FAA and local law enforcement were warned ahead of time.

What genius thought this was a good idea?

Maaaaybe someone should have told the local news orgs to mention this last night.

Statement from Louis Caldera, Director White House Military Office, on Air Force One flight over New York:

"Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it's clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused."

I'm sure he was the lowest man on the list and will soon be out of work or promoted depending on whose a** he is covering.

WASHINGTON – An administration official says a presidential Boeing 747 and a fighter jet flew low near ground zero in New York City Monday because the White House Military Office wanted to update its file photo of the president's plane near the Statue of Liberty.

Somehow this did not make the news cycle in the conservative Chicago Tribune today.

I didn't see you deliver my paper this morning.

Front page of the trib newspaper now is saved for celebrity gossip, pictures of puppy dogs and sports. Red Eye has more news.

Perhaps you've missed the last 6 months of the Tribune. But nonetheless, more people read their Web site than subscribe to their paper, and it's on the home page, which gets more views than any other page of their site, so your point was moot. Damn liberal media! Giving things appropriate coverage!

I'm not the one who said it was on the front page. Front page= newspaper. My point was not moot. If you stopped trying to be a smartass you would realize you were wrong.

The trib ain't all that conservative anymore... but I guess compared to the Sun Times, anything moderate looks extremely conservative.
