2009 MLB Pre-Draft Discussion

scenario

Recommended Posts

feeling lazy today, so tomorrow I'm gonna do some final draft reports, and hopefully by Tuesday morning I'll have my top 100-150 ranked with a mock draft. If I had more time, I'd try and do a whole first day mock draft, but I think I'll only have time for round 1 and maybe supplemental round A.

Lets overslot like with Kenny's worthless kid last year! That pick in many draft circles was rated worst pick of entire 2008 draft! :stick :fight :bang

and it was one f***ing pick in a crapshoot of a draft. They also had one of the best picks in the entire draft in Jordan Danks, and he could very well open the year in the majors next year in CF for the Sox. I don't see you giving them credit there.

The 2008 draft for the Sox was overall very good, and the 2007 draft had some decent hits as well. But there is no denying that the KWJR pick in Round 5 last year was a horrible, embarrassing pick for the organization.

Right now, these are the three arms I'm highest on. Two of which are very unlikely. What with Brothers rocketing up the boards and Paxton being a Boras client.

Rex Brothers, LHP, Lipscomb Rex Brothers, LHP, Lipscomb

Kyle Heckathorn, RHP, Kennesaw State

James Paxton, LHP, Kentucky

Could be nothing, but maybe is something, but the official White Sox Twitter (I don't tweet, I just follow, for the record) lists some twitters to follow about the draft. One is Lisa Winston, one is Jonathan Mayo, one is the official MLB draft twitter and the last one is Drew Storen, pitcher from Stanford. Could Reifert have gotten some inside info? People on the board like him, he is from Indiana, has a Stanford connection with KW and fits the mold of a college pitcher. Probably not for the first pick, but maybe the 2nd or 3rd. Looking at his numbers this year, so-so ERA, but terrific peripherals. He also has three pitches, so he could be converted back to a starter. But I thought it was interesting that Reifert would include a link to his twitter, but no one elses.

Donovan Tate might not go in the 1st round. At least that is the latest talk. If he is there at 23, I personally wish the Sox would sign him and just make a fatty offer. He's a top 4 talent in this draft with a ton of upside. Sure there is bust potential, but we have a ton of veterans making big time money that we could move for something and use that money on Tate or our draft.

Here's what Jim Callis has to say about Mitchell:

23. WHIITE SOX (Jim). I'll take athletic outfielders for $200, Alex. GM Kenny Williams loves athletes, loves them, and his team really needs a center fielder of the future. Outside of Donavan Tate, Louisiana State outfielder Jared Mitchell is as athletic as it gets in this draft. He also doubles as a wide receiver for the football team, and while he still has to figure things out with the bat, he made impressive and encouraging strides this year.

If we pick Mitchell, I'll be a bit disappointed. If we're going to take a guy that needs a lot more development and is a pure "potential" guy (e.g. a guy that has all the tools, but need to develop/refine them to be successful), then I'd rather go with a high school kid... Tate would be fantastic. I think he'd be worth trying to get to sign.

The funny thing is some people will look at beautox's "projections" and complain tomorrow when we don't come close to getting some of those guys.

Maybe he should label them as "wet dreams".

And as T'bolt stated, I'd love to take a chance on Chris Dominguez. Those are the type of guys that even if they are only AAAA players, you can still trade them and get good value.

I agree, I wouldn't mind drafting him at all. He's got a ton of power, has a really strong arm and is a solid defender at 3B, and has surprisingly good speed for a guy his size. He's a really good athlete. If he can figure it out with the bat, he could be a solid player in the league.

He's a sick looking athlete, quick hands, everything. I think he'll rake his first couple years. Don't know if he has the defensive position but I see him moving up the systems quickly and really having a lot of value as a prospect at the very least. Don't know if he'll be able to stay at 3rd or not, but he's lean and strong as f***.
