5/8 Games

Abdominal strain for Beckham. Will miss tonight and probably Saturday. They have a scheduled off day on Sunday, and hopes to be back on Monday.

It happened in his first AB last night. He bunted, thought it was foul and got a late jump out of the box. Then on his double later on he said he really felt it bad.

This is coming from the Barons announcer, Curt Bloom.

Barons lead 6-5, 6th inning. Bases loaded, nobody out with Brandon Allen at the plate...

Allen walked, gift RBI

Viciedo sac fly

Cook out

Cruz basehit, scoring Flowers

Retherford with a tape measure 3-run shot

Second homer of the night for CJ Retherford. 5 homers this season. Why isn't this guy a real prospect again? Because he's ugly or something?

The real reason CJ doesn't receive the acclaim he could get is because he was undrafted. And the reason he was undrafted... two issues:

1. He didn't have a clear position in college. In fact, he played EVERY position, literally... including being a pretty decent pitcher. His coach at Arizona State said during CJ's junior year that he thought he'd eventually end up as a catcher. (During one game at ASU he actually pitched and caught in the same inning. LOL.)

2. He suffered a high ankle sprain early during his final season. So he didn't play much until late in the year. (Although he kicked *** for ASU in the CWS.)

So... no clear position and injured in his final year which lead to his being overlooked by most teams. Except for us. Advantage us.

Is Retherford approaching Shelby/Cook prospect status, or is he already their for most people?

How can Shelby and Cook be considered in the same stratosphere as a prospect with each other? Cook is almost 28 years old with a .764 OPS in AA. Shelby is 4 years younger than him and showing signs of improving his K/BB ratio.

It seems we usually split the propsects into tiers, discounting age: we'd have Poreda, Beckham, Viciedo, ETC, in the top tier, with Shelby, Cook a bit behind in terms of both performace and expectation. I think Retherford's hit well enough to put himself into the discussion, if he's wasn't already.

I think this was pretty much the same case with Michael Aviles, which is why he really had to hit well almost every day to keep his position...and the fact, like Rutherford, he really doesn't have a good defensive position where he's clearly "above average" is also a detriment.

The way Josh Fields has been going, I'd almost rather see CJ Rutherford up there for a week to see what he could do...of course, this will happen about as soon as Cook becomes the starting CFer.

Shelby and Cook, not in the same solar system as far as prospect status goes. Cook=Gartrell, if we want to be charitable to David.

It's a shame too. IF he'd been able to figure it out two-three years ago he'd still be in the bigger picture, but a 28 year old kid in AA is not going to cut it.

Please don't compare Shelby and Cook.

It was an arbitrary ranking system, they don't equate talent wise, if it would make everyone feel better we can just forget the post ever happened. I was tired. In conclusion, Retherford is good, Shelby is good, Cook is old.
