P90X

I have some questions for those of you that use the P90X, I've read through a lot of information but want your take.

What items are necessary with the program? What do you recommend? (Chinup Bar, Resistance Bands, Dumbbells, Push Up Bar)

- I've read some use Dumbbells in place of the bands (I have dumbbells so not a problem)

- I know I don't need the yoga mat since I have a wrestling mat at home

- The push up bar I feel is something I can make

As for the nutrition plan, do any of you not follow it and get results? I eat pretty well as is and have to monitor cholesterol so I am good at controlling what I eat, I'm just wondering how attached are you to that plan. I don't need to lose weight but gain.

Also, I see that there is a daily schedule but if I wanted to swap some of the days like do yoga on weekends and other stuff during the week would that be ok?

I feel like I have more questions but I'm just not thinking of them, looking to purchase and obviously I am a beginner, any tips?

Fwiw, I'm 5'10 and weigh 154

You are a stick already, so if you do this program, you will be super ripped up and lean.

I would say, pull up bar, dumbbells and a chair and you are set. Follow the schedule for the first 90 days so you get the hang of why he does it that way. It really has a set means to an end.

I dont follow the diet very well and thats why I still havent gotten to my goal of ripped up abs. I would say if you can watch what you eat, cut down on alcohol, you will be very successful in the program.

Whats your goal for P90? Is it muscle mass, weight loss or overall fitness?

This may not be for you then because it WILL lean you out. Although you will gain mass, you will also lose a ton of fat. Of course the real end result is that you will be in terrific shape. I was telling a friend yesterday, I cannot remember the last time I could do 50 pullups in a row, not since probably junior high or HS.

Well, looking more lean wouldn't be a bad thing and I'll probably amend the diet to add more protein. That and I've read that using heavier weights/less reps/lifting till failure also would help with mass, I'm sure I can tinker with the workouts that it will work out. Getting in shape in general would be good for me and seeing reuslts would finally make me continue with lifting as opposed to stopping with my previous routines because of impatience.

Can you afford more bands?

Yeah, maybe I'll give that a try. The dumbbells that I want are the adjustable bowflex ones because I don't have room for a set in my apt. I guess I could save up for them eventually but it doesn't make as much sense when I have a free gym to go to. Are the bands working for others?

I've used both, and I like both. I think each have benefits for different things.

Such as? I'd assume the weights for muscle mass and the bands for flexibility and lean muscle???

I've used both and I prefer the weights 100%. It just made it so much harder for me, and also easier to do the exercises.

Yeah, that's what I figured. It feels like the workouts that need weights aren't really doing much. Now the cardio ones on the other hand......

If you have to correct bands, trust me, they work. There are many exercises where the bands are better than the weights, because they encourage better form and make certain you are exercising the correct muscle. Additionally, they are less dangerous in some instances, because of how fatigued you can get in these workouts.

On the other hand, the weights are better for plenty of the more traditional exercises in P90x, and certainly easier to set up.

Watch the Back & Biceps video with that Tim guy using the bands, and tell me they are worthless....

Well, it's mainly the bicep and tricep exercises that I'm talking about. They do feel like they are working on the back and shoulder exercises.

You probably just need heavier bands...what weight are they rated at?

Ehh, good question......they came with the beachbody set with the pullup/pushup bar. I'm using the green one.

Just looked it up. It's 40 lbs. That's odd, though, because there's no way I could do curls with 40 lb dumbbells.

I don't know what to tell you then. Make bigger loops.

I certainly was not very strong by any means, but for the first 8 weeks or so of P90X, I used the bands. And I think I did go up from a 25 pound band to a 30 to a 40 pound band. But it certainly did the job.

My guess is that if you're doing these workouts and you don't feel much, you're either very strong already and need a very heavy duty band, or you are not doing enough reps.

Yeah, probably not much to tell me. I just gotta get the dumbbells. I would do more reps, but I'm trying to go for size over definition.
