Slumps all over the place...

Unfortunately for the Sox, their team effort Sunday consisted of a 2-for-17 performance with runners in scoring position and Gavin Floyd allowing at least five earned runs for the fifth time this season.

The momentum of a two-run first was stunted when Alex Rios hit a homer off Floyd in the bottom of the inning and completely wiped out when Adam Lind hit a three-run shot in the fourth.

"I feel great," said Floyd, whose ERA swelled to 7.71. "You've got to ignore what happened the past couple of games and just move on."

Aside from Paul Konerko, who had three hits, the batters continue to struggle. Slumps include Getz (1-for-22), Fields (1-for-15), Dye (2-for-14) and A.J. Pierzynski (3-for-22). Since a three-hit game Wednesday, Ramirez is 1-for-11.

Slumping Chris Getz not discouraged

Sox second baseman: 'You just bounce back, keep going'

May 18, 2009

TORONTO -- The White Sox protected Chris Getz on Tuesday by taking him out of the leadoff spot.

Now it's Getz's turn to adjust to opposing pitchers, who have recently solved him with inside fastballs and off-speed pitches away.

"That's the way pitchers have attacked me since I was in college," Getz said before Sunday's game. "It's just whether I can make that adjustment, and that's something I need to start doing."

Getz is in a 1-for-22 slump after hitting as high as .291 as recently as May 10. He has never batted lower than .256 in any of his four previous professional seasons, so he's not discouraged.

"If I was down, it was because I wish we were winning more games," said Getz, whose average dipped to .238 after his 0-for-4 Sunday. "It's just baseball, and I'm used to this stuff. You just bounce back, keep going. I made it this far. There's no reason to start changing stuff."

It concerns me a little that Floyd says he feels great, and to ignore these games. He did improve in his approach, despite the showing for it, but he still isn't getting his breaking pitches over for strikes early in the count. His fastball is too flat for him to rely on it the way he is right now.

It really amazes me how almost the entire team is slumping. One guy playing well will not get it done. Hell, four guys playing well will not get it done. The Sox can't rely on Buehrle and Colon (who would have thought Colon would be solid for us?) to have good starts and not worry about atrocious starts by the other three. The bullpen is getting way too much work, and it's starting to show. And the hitting, well, I don't even want to talk about that.

What will it take to break the team out of this slump? I don't think it will be an explosive 15-hit, 8-run win. They needed to win the game the other night when they were up 1-0. Sure a 1-0 win doesn't say much for the offense, but it could have produced a spark.

I don't know. I'm pretty frustrated, and I'm starting to think that this season is a lost cause. Looks like the Sox will need to break their slump so us fans can break ours. We need some optimism.
