3B Jon Gilmore

Born: 8/23/88

Height: 6'3

Weight: 195

Bats: Right

Throws: Right

School: Iowa City High School

Acquired from Atlanta Braves in Javier Vazquez trade.

Hitting Ability: Gilmore showed a better approach at the plate during this showcase than he had in the past. He adjusted well to offspeed stuff and showed good extension through the zone.

Power: Gilmore has projectable raw power.

Running Speed: He's a below-average runner.

Arm Strength: Gilmore's arm seemed tired or labored during the showcase.

Fielding: Gilmore was a little slow defensively with an almost casual approach.

Range: The lack of quickness showed and his range was limited.

Physical Description: Gilmore has an Aaron Boone-body type and has changed physically in the past year, looking stronger now.

Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: Offensive potential, with power and overall hitting ability projection.

Weaknesses: His defensive game is behind his bat and was lackluster with the glove at this showcase.

Summary: Gilmore improved at the plate tremendously in his senior season. The infielder has good raw power and showed a better overall approach in his offensive game. His defense isn't as sharp, but he will be drafted because of his bat potential.

2009 with the Kannapolis Intimidators...

.236 AVG

.288 OBP

.324 SLG

.612 OPS

148 AB

35 H

2 HR

11 RBI

7 2B

0 3B

16 R

10 BB

26 K

1 SB/1 CS

The numbers don't look good whatsoever, but in his last 10 games he is 16-37, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 2B, 8 R.

Defensively...he's just plain bad. 13 errors so far.

Sounds like a future 1B/LF, but I do think he has a special bat and hopefully the hot stretch he is on now continues. Btw, Soxfan1 you been great with the AAP's lately, much appreciated.

even if your name is a blatant rip off of mine ;)

No problem, and thanks for the acknowledgment. I'm really excited about a lot of guys in our system right now, and I pretty much check all the stats every day to see how the top guys are doing.

And we both know who the original is... ;)

April was bad, May was better, and he's started off in June very hot, with 6 hits in his last 13 at bats. He's currently on a 5 game hitting streak. He's been inconsistent however, with some good games and some bad games.

Gilmore has been pretty sexy at Winston-Salem in 56 games:

.331 AVG

.356 OBP

.411 SLG

.767 OPS

3 HR

33 RBI

82 H (70 singles)

7 2B

2 3B

12 BB

37 K

1/2 SB

Extra base power and plate discipline could be improved but he's hitting. 17 errors at 3B though.

Saw Gilmore playing with the Barons yesterday. He was at DH. Hasn't been hitting well in Birmingham, and everyone in the crowd down the 3b line could tell you why. Every time he swung at a pitch he was trying to be Sammy Sosa. Practically came flying out of his shoes. Shoulder flew so far open that on the back part of his swing he was facing the 3b dugout.

Gilmore is 23 years old heading into the 2012 season.

Last year in AA:

50 G, .283 AVG, .351 OBP, 3 HR, 28 RBI, 13 2B, 1 3B, 32 K, 18 BB, 19 R, .768 OPS

He's a 3B prospect, but played primarily 1B in Birmingham.

Pretty awful April for Gilmore:

.179 AVG (10-56), 0 HR, 7 RBI, 3 2B, 10 R, 24 K, 7 BB (.281 OBP, .232 SLG, .513 OPS)

Limited playing time. Another KW Jr. victim. He is playing adequate LF though.

So the guy who supposedly had massive power potential and has only showed it in a HR derby has a massive swing? Gotta love the minors.

Horse legs.
