Kalapse
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:09 PM) Just think, a few more losses and we could have been holding Pedro Alvarez and his .784 OPS in high A ball. And even despite that Pedro Alvarez still has incredible trade value, a few poor months in high A ball don't overshadow his talent.

Pretty sure you're being sarcastic. But I'd take Alvarez in a second over Beckham. Dumbass Javy went Zack Greinke down the stretch that year and pretty much single-handedly eliminated any chance of us landing him.
greg775
Did somebody actually say a radio announcer indicated we could get Cain for Nix/Getz? That guy can't be serious? Not that Cain is Johnny Sain but Nix/Getz are scrubs with much to prove before they are more than that.
CanOfCorn
Not to mention that SF has seen Jayson Nix as a member of the Rockies. So, he's what you would call...out.

Chisoxfn
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 01:49 PM) You'd take Alvarez in a second over Beckham? Really? I think over 90% of scouts would too. Beckham might have to move to 3B and if he does you now are comparing Alvarez and Beckham. Alvarez is better defensively and he has such massive offensive potential. That said, six months from now, people might be making fun of me for saying this cause Alvarez has been terrible in his short lived professional career. I think there's quite a few teams out there that would re-evaluate letting G. Beckham fall to 8 in that draft. His stock has risen higher than anyone's. Personally, I'll keep slayer over making a move for a guy who is at best 3 years away.

Wait, are you saying Alvarez is 3 years away? Cause most scouts probably would have figured he'd be close to the majors by now. He's sucked ass in professional ball but once the switch flips it shouldn't take long for him to be at the major league level. Really, when you look at how the draft went, almost all of the top 10 is looking pretty damn good, with the big exception being Kyle Skipworth and Alvarez (but Alvarez was a total no brainer). Chisoxfn
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) Not all scouts are right on about talent. I think in Beck's case, many of them really missed the boat. But look at the draft, almost everyone is producing at a great clip. It just happens to be last year is looking like a sick top 10 of the draft and I think it would be a big mistake to write off Alvarez because of a few months of professional ball, especially after what he did and showed in college. People were comparing this guy to all of the offensive greats.

Reddy
CAIN. IS. NOT. GOOD. I don't get the love. he'd be even worse here. Peavy was concerned about the AL? hah. this kid would be lit up.

chw42
QUOTE (Reddy @ May 27, 2009 -> 05:52 PM) CAIN. IS. NOT. GOOD. I don't get the love. he'd be even worse here. Peavy was concerned about the AL? hah. this kid would be lit up. If you're all that concerned that he's going to get absolutely rammed in the ass in the AL, let's look at some of his stats. ERA+ of 122 in his career. That's adjusted for his ballpark and the National League. That's not all that bad. A road ERA of 3.90. That's a half run difference between home and away, so this isn't Jake Peavy we're talking about. He also has a 3.55 ERA in Interleague play across 12 starts. All of those factors tell me that he'll at least post a ERA around 4 if he played here. With the run support he will get, he'll be a decent pitcher. Nothing Jake Peavy-like, but still pretty damn good. Decent #2 or #3. Edited May 28, 2009 by chw42
daa84
do people realize that Matt Cain is almost 2 years younger than Gavin Floyd? Yeah he's pitched in the NL and in a big park...but you know what? he's been healthy and at age 24 youd expect hes only gonna get better in his career. He's also been an innings eater, and his highest ERA in his career was a 4.15 when he was 21 years old. You don't get him and expect him to be an ace...but he's a solid #3 starter...if you ask me he's a younger, probably better javy vazquez

Are you saying someone ripped off Matt Cain's balls? Because if you are, you better not tell me anything more. Because I don't want to hear it. fathom
Not a huge Cain fan. I'll never forgive him for turning on his brother, the Undetaker. Anyways, Cain's about to become very expensive, and the one stat that really worries me about him is that, as of last week, has allowed 48% of the first batter he faces each inning to reach. I'm pretty sure his agent was Kyle Rote Jr. Anyway, Rote negotiated a contract with the Cleveland Browns over the phone while Scottie Pippen who he also represented at the time was in his office. Pip said to him when he hung up, "Is that all those guys make?"
