RockRaines
QUOTE (Disco72 @ May 29, 2009 -> 09:40 AM) Ok, so the comparison sucks. That doesn't change the fact that this kid cheated - do you really believe he had no idea what was going on? I believe he knew, and I like him less as a result of it. I'll still cheer for him and the Bulls, but I don't have to like him. Dont worry, one game winning drive and you'll forget about it.
maggsmaggs
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 29, 2009 -> 09:40 AM) Lets be clear here, the guy never cheated in sports, it wasnt steroids, it wasnt a game day thing, he cheated so that he could get to the next level in an organization that he had no future in anyway. Its really not that big of a deal to me now to be honest. DROSE is too good of a bball player for this to do ANYTHING to his image. I'm pretty sure everyone or at least 99.9 percent of folks on this site knew he had cheated at some point in the process. That's part of the problem, though. We overlook negative things about our sports heroes because they are real good at their sport. That's OK?

The fact he is willing to lie, cheat, and steal any any level pretty much means he wouldn't be above cheating in the sport to. Besides it is silly distinction. The guy is as much of a cheater as anyone else that has been fried in pro sports. Its pathetic that people are kissing his ass because he plays in Chicago. Good for him. You've had a grade illegally changed on a transcript and cheated on your ACT or SAT? Because it's clearly not the same cheating than just taking an answer from a classmate during a test. Yeah, we've most all glanced at a kid next to us for an exam answer, but I doubt anyone here did what Rose did. Most of us also NEEDED our education to get into a school where we could further our education to go into a career. The kids career is basketball, I akin this to someone who cheated in gym class who is now an accountant. I bet plenty of nerds thought think that wouldnt be that big of a deal since "what does gym have to do with my career." Its the same with DROSE, he just needed to get to the next level that is required of him to further his career is bball. They should strip him off all credits in both HS and college, and the dude still rules on the hardcourt.

nitetrain8601
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 29, 2009 -> 09:19 AM) So I am curious about those who think Calipari is some sort of scumbag, but Rose is OK. What is the difference between the two? They both cheated their asses off, why is one guy having excuses made for him? I agree and said that all day yesterday. Supposedly though, Cal is a slimeball and Derrick can do no wrong and if he does, it's justified because he's just a kid. I personally think that's BS. There are a ton of other student athletes who are just kids. This is way worse than OJ Mayo, way worse than a Maurice Clarrett.

Done. Cal cant coach in college anymore, Derrick cant play in college anymore.
Soxbadger
The reason why I dont really care what Rose did but think that Cal should face sanctions is as follows: Derrick Rose is a basketball player. Derrick Rose is not accused of cheating while playing basketball. Derrick Rose is being accused of scholastic cheating, and I dont think anyone here really believes that school matters at all with his profession. In comparison John Calipari is a basketball coach. A large part of his job is recruiting so that he can win basketball games. When Calipari cheated he was screwing all of the other NCAA teams who did not cheat to get players on their teams. zenryan
QUOTE (rangercal @ May 29, 2009 -> 02:08 AM) anyone dogging rose should just go back to their cubicles at their 9-5's and take some more orders from their respective bosses. Rose may not have a high IQ due to having the misfortune of a cps education in horrible low budgeted areas. Just be thankful you never had to go through a similar ordeal. While you are in your respective cubicles taking orders, let him show his gift to the world, basketball. That's all I really care about. Might be one of the dumbest posts in soxtalk history.... And that is saying a lot.
Dick Allen
The big sham is that Rose went to college in the first place. There's no excuse for his cheating. It shows a lack of character IMO. The grade change he might have had nothing to do with. A fill in for his SAT, that's a problem with me. Soxbadger
The problem is that everyone won by Rose going to college. Memphis won because its program got recognition and went to the Championship. NCAA won because Rose played in the NCAA and therefore presumably brought in more fans, viewers etc. NBA won because they didnt have to draft Rose right out of High School so he got 1 year of development free. The NCAA wants these players in Division 1 programs, they dont want Rose going to a Juco and then the NBA. So if it wasnt Memphis, it would have been somewhere. I think thats why Rose is some what being let off the hook, because the NCAA knows this is what it takes to make sure the the top players go to big time NCAA programs. maggsmaggs
A lot of this also comes down to Reggie Rose who clearly is the ring leader in this. Derrick is clearly not the sharpest knife in the drawer and Reggie needed to live vicariously through Derrick to realize his own failed basketball dreams. So he probably told Derrick there is nothing wrong with cheating on the SAT, everyone does it to play college b-ball and told him more lies. He looks up to his brother in a big way and follows his orders acquiescently. I blame Derrick a lot and this shows what a moron he is, his lack of character and really makes me like him less, but Reggie Rose is the biggest culprit IMO. As a society, and especially sports fans, now accept cheating as ok, or even necessary. Sad. Actually earning what you get is no longer necessary. Other kids in that class actually worked for their grades, but that is only necessary of you are not athletically gifted. f*** the regular students. Sorry, but when cheating is condoned, we all lose. It erodes at the foundation of our education system and our society.

Weber was not going to give a kid's brother some money and deal with all his shenanigans. There's probably some shenanigans involved at just about every school, Illinois included. What has been discovered about Rose at Memphis is most likely the tip of the iceberg. If the only things illegal were a grade change, someone taking his SAT and $2600 for his brother, Memphis actually must be fairly clean.
