He's clearly been the best pitcher in the AL from start to finish. Even when he was 'struggling' in the middle of the season he was still pitching better than the majority of pitchers in baseball. He's got a lot going against him, though. One, he only has 13 wins. It's a shame. He's gotten some of the crappiest run support in baseball, and the defense behind him is well below average. Here's how consistently effective both Greinke and Felix have been this year, highest Quality Start % in the AL since 2000: 1 .862% Pedro Matinez 2000 2 .824% Dan Haren 2007 3 .821% Zack Greinke 2009 4 .821% Felix Hernandez 2009 His final 4 or 5 starts will determine quite a bit but Zack Greinke is having one of the best seasons by a starting pitcher in American League history, it's just a shame that I wouldn't be surprised to see him finish 3rd in the Cy Young voting behind Sabathia and Verlander because he plays for the team with the worst offense in the AL. I personally still say it's his to lose. The only person who should even be considered against him is King Felix, though I'm sure ESPN and others will slob on Sabathia's nuts cause as Kalapse said, his team is winning the division more than likely. I think this will be a repeat of Cliff Lee when his team sucked, but his year was just so dominant that it can't be overlooked. Greinke might be hard pressed to win 16-17 games. If he does, I don't see how you don't give him the award. But the thing is, these voters weigh W-L record almost as much as ERA. Bartolo Colon won the award in 2005 with a ERA of 3 and a half. He won it because he went 21-5. Johan's ERA was nearly a run lower and he finished 3rd. It would be a tragic shame if he lost it just because he's not on a winning team. Plus... he made me look like a genius when I drafted him in one of my 20-team/25-man roster fantasy baseball leagues in a later round instead of drafting a "premium" pitcher like Linecum or Halladay in an earlier round.
