This is probably the time to do it if you're Seattle. Coming off the season he's just had, still pre-arb, teams like Boston and NY holding a bunch of talented youngsters that you can pilfer, and you're smack in the middle of a multi-year rebuilding process where he really doesn't help you. Hernandez is 6-1 with a 1.94 ERA in his last 11 starts, is second overall in ERA (2.49), tied for second in wins (17) and fourth in strikeouts (207). For an extended portion of the season, Hernandez even put up better numbers than Greinke, who is 7-7 with a 2.74 ERA since May 31, while Hernandez is 13-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 23 starts since May 24. Both pitchers have two starts left, and judgment may be reserved until the end of the season, but here’s why Greinke holds the edge: He started the season in otherworldly fashion (8-1 with an 0.84 ERA in his first 10 starts) and is ending it the same way. In his last six starts beginning with a 15-K win over the Indians, Greinke is 4-0 with an 0.63 ERA. No pitcher in the AL can point to two such stretches of dominance. He gave up his one buffer run so he now needs 7 shutout innings in his final start to finish the season with an ERA of 1.9927 or 1.99 after rounding it off. It would be only the 29th time since 1950 that a starting pitcher finished the season with a sub-2 ERA in 200+ IP and only the 15th AL pitcher to do it over that span, only the 10th time for either league in the past 30 years and 3rd time in the AL over that span. It would have been 6 years had Santana won it in 05 like he should have. Pretty interesting stuff.
