Take Wakefield off of that list immediately. There is absolutely no reason to consider him as a Cy Young contender.

I just use the guys off the CYP. It's not personal preference.

Do perfect games affect CYP other than the fact that he got 9 innings of flawless ball?

There's no bonus for a perfect game, but the overall performance with a win, complete game, shutout, and lower ERA sure helps.

CYP: In The Neyer/James Guide To Pitchers -- co-authored by Bill James and ESPN.com's Rob Neyer presents a method, based on past results, to predict Cy Young balloting. This page provides an in-season snapshot of the Cy Young "race," as figured by the following formula: Cy Young Points (CYP) = ((5*IP/9)-ER) + (SO/12) + (SV*2.5) + Shutouts + ((W*6)-(L*2)) + VB (see below).

VB: Victory Bonus is a 12-point bonus awarded for leading your team to the division champsionship (pro-rated based on the current standings)

Lack of strikeouts really hurt Buehrle's CyP. He's got a better ERA+ than both Beckett and Weaver and he still doesn't have a CyP rating.

If Buehrle wanted a perfect game to go along with a Cy Young, he either better pitch like a man possessed and lead the Sox to a division title, or he picked the wrong year. Both Greinke and Felix have pitched far superior, and Beckett is damn near destined to pitch for a team that makes the playoffs (which I would imagine adds 12 to his CyP rating, as he helped lead his team to a playoff appearance, even if it's not technially a division title).

If he puts up a 2005-esque 3.12 ERA - and he's close with a lot of time left, which is good and bad - and wins 8 or so games in the next 2 months, and leads the team to a division win, he's got a chance. He's only lost 3 times which helps him a hell of a lot. If he ends the year at roughly 19-5, 3.15 ERA with the Sox winning the division, I'd say he has a hell of a good chance, even if Greinke and Felix's ERA's end up south around or (well) below 2.75. Remember that in 07 Sabathia won it over Beckett even though Beckett won one more game and pitched for the media favorite Red Sox, mainly because he pitched more innings (Sabathia's K/9 that year was 7.8, much higher than Buehrle, but it's worth considering all the same). Same story actually happened in 2005 when several pitchers, including Buehrle, Garland, Santana, and Lee all pitched better or arguably better (better in Buehrle and Santana's case, arguably in Garland and Lee's case) than Bartolo Colon, but he won 21 games). I'm not going to do the math right now, but I would bet that the first 3 finished real close (guessing Santana-Buehrle-Garland in that order, which is also funny, since Cliff Lee finished higher than both Buehrle and Garland, even though the Sox won the division).

It was colon, rivera, santana, lee, buehrle, garland, and millwood in that order. Colon had 118 points, rivera 68, santana 51, lee 8, buehrle 5, garland 1, and millwood with one.

Yes, that is votes. I also have reference to Baseball Reference.

That is not the CyP rating.

Colon wasn't that good that year. He only won because he was 21-6. Buehrle was better than his fat ass in a lot of respects. Santana should have won it that year.
