JackTalkThai
TIFWIW but ESPN's Cy Young predictor has Verlander as the only pitcher ranked ahead of Grienke. Apparently, largely because of the VB bonus (ie. victory bonus...leading your team to a division title). http://espn.go.com/mlb/features/cyyoung Edited September 8, 2009 by JackTalkThai
ThunderBolt
Do they have a general team suckitude bonus? Greinke doesn't get to face the Royals, Verlander does.
High Mileage
Found this interesting... Too bad the Royals continue to sabotage him at every turn with the worst run support, worst defense (both by UZR and fielding %), and worst bullpen in the AL. He has a 2.05 ERA in 7 no decisions, plus two losses in which he gave up one run each. The Royals scored 16 runs in those nine games. Jordan4life_2007
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 8, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) Unless Greinke has a couple of 10 ER outings, anyone winning the award other than him at this point is a joke. I'm not a big Sabermetrics guy (although I've warmed up to them quite a bit in the last year or so), but you hope this is when all these 'new' stats and ways of evaluating players makes an impact. 30 years ago Greinke probably doesn't have a chance. Because of the W total and the fact he pitches for one of the worst organizations in pro sports. But when you look beyond wins and even ERA (Kalapse's post above is a good example), it's Greinke's award to lose without much hesitation or thought. The writers pull that crap all the time. If Sabathia got good enough to get close to 3rd best, he might get it because the Yankees are winning. Milkman delivers
That ERA is ridiculous. There is absolutely no intelligent reasoning to NOT give the award to Greinke.

High Mileage
09/17/09 3:32 PM ET DETROIT -- Zack Greinke, the Royals' Cy Young candidate, was removed from Thursday's game just one inning after being hit in the right arm by a line drive. Greinke was drilled in his right bicep as Miguel Cabrera led off the Tigers' fourth inning. The pitcher recovered the ball and threw out Cabrera. His next pitch was an offspeed pitch to strike out Aubrey Huff. Greinke returned to pitch a perfect fifth inning with two strikeouts. However, after Josh Anderson hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to give the Royals an 8-0 lead, Greinke was removed from the game. There was no immediate word from the Royals' clubhouse regarding any injury. In his five shutout innings, Greinke struck out eight to reach the 224 mark and gave up three singles and two walks. His Major League-leading ERA sank to 2.14. Uh oh...
Milkman delivers
If he misses the last few starts, I hope they don't use it to somehow screw him out of the award. It wouldn't surprise me, though.

Jordan4life_2007
Here's a VERY good article on why Greinke probably won't win it. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=ArAY...o&type=lgns It would be a shame. But he's the CY in my eyes. I don't care who wins it.

ThunderBolt
Greinke is having a historically GREAT season. My gods this should be cut and dry. Instead, we get Yankee homers who are fighting tooth and nail to rob not only Greinke, but Mauer of awards that they richly deserve.

High Mileage
Looking at how well Sabathia has pitched at home and against the Red Sox, I think he's going to be the favorite with the voters. IF Greinke pitches well against the Red Sox tomorrow, and in his final two starts against the Twins, it should be enough to take it, although he probably needs to pick up at least 2 more victories, and that probably won't happen... chw42
It should go to either Greinke or Felix. But knowing how these things go, If C.C. wins 20 games (he has the best chance to), he's going to win the thing.
Kalapse
Greinke's 204 ERA+ is the 29th highest ever for a starting pitcher and 10th highest since 1990. 2nd highest by a starter not named Clemens, Martinez or Maddux since 1990 5th highest by a starter not named Clemens, Martinez or Maddux since 1950 (Gibson, Gooden, Brown, Guidry ahead of him) 7th highest by an AL starter since 1950 (only 3 pitchers ahead of him: Martinez (3), Clemens (2), Guidry (1)) Yeah, he's getting into rarefied air
