daa84
shocked we took goodwin...especially cuz he's a boras guy....if we sign 2 of goodwin, Williams and Thompson this will be a very successful draft IMO...and frankly i'll be happy if we nab one of em Edited June 10, 2009 by daa84
Dam8610
Two most recent picks: Philip Negus RHP Wake Forest (JR) Brady Shoemaker LF Indiana St. (SR)
Chisoxfn
Thompson has to sign, otherwise that is a bad pick cause there was a lot of talent there. You don't take guys that early without the intent to sign em. The later picks you can take your chance on and hope to hit on em. Considering they went cheap most places in the draft, they better sign Thompson and than one of Bane/Goodwin. If they can sign both, phenomenal. Another Indiana State guy for the Sox, Brady Shoemaker, OF. HeGawn, looking your direction again.
Chisoxfn
Shoemaker is a senior outfielder that looks more like an organizationl type of guy.
daa84
more on goodwin... One of the better athletes in the draft class, Goodwin was part of a strong North Carolina prep class. He has very good tools across the board but wasn't having a tremendous spring, and his signability was thrown into question when he became a client of Scott Boras Corp. Goodwin does a lot of things well and doesn't have a below-average future tool. His bat will be the question, because unlike players such as Donavan Tate or Dustin Ackley, he's just a good athlete, not a great one. Goodwin shined on the showcase circuit last summer, winning MVP of the Aflac All-American Game. The lefthanded hitter has above-average speed, and scouts generally grade him as average or above across the board, with the question coming with his power. Goodwin has present strength and a football body, which makes sense as he was an excellent kick returner in high school. A North Carolina signee, Goodwin could go in the supplemental first round or not until much later due to his college commitment and adviser. Ozzie Ball
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 08:04 PM) Thompson has to sign, otherwise that is a bad pick cause there was a lot of talent there. You don't take guys that early without the intent to sign em. The later picks you can take your chance on and hope to hit on em. And he was one of the comp picks so we won't even get it back if don't sign him.
Chisoxfn
My first look might have been wrong. Shoemaker is apparently a very good hitter. Not the greatest defensive tools though so he'll have to hit the hell out of the ball.
Dam8610
Sox pick LHP Nathan Reed from Pitt (JR)
daa84
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 02:11 PM) Sox pick LHP Nathan Reed from Pitt (JR) Lefthander Nate Reed emerged as Pennsylvania's top prep prospect heading into the 2006 draft thanks largely to his arm strength and projection. But as one scout put it, he's been Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in three years at Pittsburgh, and he was wildly inconsistent as a junior this spring, going 4-6, 6.21. On good days, Reed pitches downhill with an 89-92 mph fastball, flashes an average curveball and shows feel for a changeup. Other times, he works in the 86-88 range with a below-average curveball and struggles to get hitters out. As a 6-foot-3, 180-pound lefthander with arm strength, Reed could be drafted in the 10-to-12-round range, or he could slip and return to Pitt for his senior year. He profiles as a reliever in pro ball.

If he would have been eligible to go last year, he would have went in the top 10 rounds but he had a lot of command issues this past season and dropped. Good arm for a lefty, solid secondary stuff. Nice value righ there.

dasox24
And the Sox redeem themselves with Goodwin. Now, chances are he's not going to sign, but if we make a good offer and develop a solid relationship (e.g. what we did with Jordan Danks), chances are very likely we'd try to redraft him in 3 years if he develops like we hope. Chisoxfn
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 12:19 PM) Why wasn't he eligible last year? He wasn't a draft eligible sophmore, usually (unless you are old for your level) you aren't eligible at a four year college until your junior season. Juco players can be drafted at any time. BA on our 8th round pick Ryan Buch is a very interesting pick at No. 253 (White Sox, eighth round). Midway through this spring, Buch was generating second-round buzz, thanks to a fastball that reached 95 and an absurdly hard, downer curveball. But he did not show that kind of stuff down the stretch, and he struggled with his command. His numbers in the weak Northeast Conference were mediocre, and he slipped to the eighth round. Buch has a durable 6-foot-3 frame and could take off in a bullpen role, though he lacks the third pitch necessary to start.
