southsider2k5
Gee do you think this comes from the fact that he, Wood and Zambrano are all in the top 5 or so in pitches per start in the NL? http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2003/0720/1583188.html
DonkeyKongerko
I dunno is 140 pitches alot? Who knew?
SI1020
I guess you guys wouldn't like me as a manager. I think the obsession with pitch counts is anal to the maximum. I do find it curious that all these young pitchers come down with sore arms, torn rotator cuffs, torn labrums, tendonitis and on and on. I'm not that old. I remember when many of the stud pitchers would rack up 280-310 innings per season. Their arms didn't fall off. What's the matter with todays pitchers? Chisoxfn
All those pitches definately have an effect. Prior is so young that his arm isn't fully developed yet and thats why you dont want him throwing a ton of pitches. As he gets older and his body is more used to it and done growing, then you can extend him more. Baker is f'in up those pitchers.
KipWellsFan
f***, in the olden days there were cases where a pitcher would start both of the games in a double-header.
AssHatSoxFan
maybe it is cuz he is not black so throwing all those pitches makes him more tired in the sun

The "old" days they didn't throw the way they do now in between starts, and they didn't have the variety of off speed stuff that they do now. Pitchers are putting way more strain on their elbows and shoulders than they ever used to do.

Chisoxfn
Wrong thread Jas Ya, I just realized that, lol. Why don't I continue that with that there is now one out with the Royals hitting and Rhodes is pitching
cwsox
How can Jesus have a sore arm? Can't he just heal himself?
Jim Fainter
His arm probs were caused by that collision with the Braves' midget second baseman, Giles. And Jason, Prior looks full grown to me.
SI1020
The "old" days they didn't throw the way they do now in between starts, and they didn't have the variety of off speed stuff that they do now. Pitchers are putting way more strain on their elbows and shoulders than they ever used to do. I have never known a time where pitchers didn't throw between starts. If todays pitchers are throwing more then why not make an adjustment? I'm not sure I go with the off speed theory either. I think with all the emphasis on radar guns the opposite may be the case. Another obsession I find counterproductive. If a pitcher can get hitters out I don't care what he registers on the radar gun. Nobody can explaing to me rationally why so many pitcher have arm problems today. Why pitching 200 innings in a season is considered a full load for a starter. Why everbody gets high blood pressure once the pitching count gets above 100. Gibson, Koufax, Seaver, Palmer on a pitch count? I don't remember it. Relievers used to be allowed to eat more innings too. Closers sometimes went 2 or 3 innings. Long guys sometimes 5 or more. Now everything is so specialized, teams carry 11 or 12 pitchers, taking a lot of strategy out of the hands of managers, especially AL managers who are already hampered by the DH. As for Prior, I hope he's ok. He's supposed to have the best pitching mechanics in MLB. I'm not trying present an "in your face" argument and hope I don't come across as such. I don't agree with the obsessions with pitch counts and radar guns and I don't like how managers have pigeonholed pitchers roles either. And like I said before, I'm baffled by the amount and severity of arm injuries in todays game.

southsider2k5
They said last night on sportscenter, that Jesus could end up on the DL... sure he can walk accross water, but he can't take a hit from a 2nd baseman?

clujer420
Prior looks full grown to me. That doesn't mean his arm is capable of taking the abuse of being a major league pitcher. The human body was not meant to hurl a baseball 95+ MPH 120 times every 5 days.

That is perhaps the biggest factor of all. If you put excessive stress on your body that it's not used to, it's going to break down. Anatomy 101. Harry Chappas
Not to mention, this is his first full season at the ML level. He probably never pitched this often in HS and college. On top of that he was so dominating he probably only threw 70/80 pitches a game at the lower (college/HS) level. I thought his fatehr had him on a pitch count his whole life. Dusty Baylor will be in troulble if this one breaks down.
clujer420
Dusty Baylor will be in troulble if this one breaks down. How so? He'll still be a millionaire. Maybe he's running Wood and Prior into the ground because he wants to get back at Whitey for oppressing him and his people for the last 150 years.
