joejoesox
Miguel Angel Cotto (Caguas, PR 33-1, 27KO) vs Joshua Clottey (Acra, Ghana, 35-2, 20KO) Fight is on HBO, not Pay-Per View Clottey relinquishes his IBF title for a chance at the WBO title, tonight at Madison Square Garden I know there aren't many Boxing fans on Soxtalk, though I think there are a few This is my most anticipated sports event this year so I'm pretty excited This is a tough fight to predict, I've seen about 4 or 5 of Clottey's most recent fights, and since I'm a huge Cotto fan I've seen almost all of his fights Next to Mayweather/Marquez in July, this should be the second biggest fight this year in terms of ratings, and will vault these two fighters careers in a new direction, one for the better and one for the worst If I had to make a prediction, it'd have to be a homer pick of Cotto UD in 12 rounds, but Clottey could win just as easily IMO It was hard to see Cotto lose his first fight against (now suspended) Antonio Margarito, I hope he doesn't taste defeat tonight as well Edited June 13, 2009 by joesaiditstrue
Buehrle>Wood
Not sure who I'm rooting for but I think Cotto takes it. Should be a good one.
Buehrle>Wood
116-111? I had Clottey winning at 114-
fathom
And that's why it's hard to take boxing serious. Cotto fought dirty as hell I thought also, as that punch to the back of the head was pretty vicious.
Buehrle>Wood
Awesome fight to watch though the scores were LOL worthy. Compubox shows Clottey had blocked pretty much anything meaningful from Cotto. Problem is Clottley kept getting stuck on the ropes, and regardless of Cotto landing next to nothing in those instances (save for round 6), it still looked good for him. joejoesox
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 10:59 PM) Awesome fight to watch though the scores were LOL worthy. Compubox shows Clottey had blocked pretty much anything meaningful from Cotto. Problem is Clottley kept getting stuck on the ropes, and regardless of Cotto landing next to nothing in those instances (save for round 6), it still looked good for him. Cotto had to fight 9 rounds with one eye, his cutman was terrible. Clottey was at a huge advantage at that point, and put absolutely zero pressure on Miguel. Had Joshua done this, he would've won the fight rather easily. He fought a poor fight, but this has been the knock on Clottey his whole career. He's incapable of putting pressure on his opponents and tonight he paid for it. Also, Cotto put down Clottey in the first round on a nice straight right. When you take into consideration that Cotto was the one defending his title, and take into consideration all the previous things I mentioned, Clottey did not get robbed. I've never seen Cotto take so many headshots and NOT get phased by them at all. It's true what they say about Joshua Clottey, he has no power behind his shots, which shows with only 20 KO's in 38 fights I had the fight: Round 1: 10-8 Cotto Round 2: 10-9 Clottey Round 3: 10-9 Cotto Round 4: 10-9 Cotto Round 5: 10-9 Clottey Round 6: 10-9 Cotto Round 7: 10-9 Clottey Round 8: 10-9 Clottey Round 9: 10-9 Cotto Round 10: 10-9 Clottey Round 11: 10-9 Clottey Round 12: 10-9 Cotto 114-113 Cotto
Buehrle>Wood
I didn't say he got robbed. Just the scores were jokes. I think this was a 114-113 fight either way, especially seeing that the middle of the fight was filled with definitive rounds for both fighters. I would have had no problem with a Cotto victory had the scores at least been closer.

The 116-111 round makes no sense, I'll definitely admit that The sad thing is, the AP had it scored 116-
Rex Hudler
I thought Clottey won the fight, but he didn't do himself any favors in the 12th round. The problem I have with scoring is that Clottey was winning the first round until the knockdown/slip at the very end of the round. It was a knockdown, but it was more due to timing and Clottey being off balance than a true knockdown punch. Cotto connected, but it wasn't that great a punch. I wouldn't say he got robbed, but I wasn't real happy with the decision, especially the scoring and I had no rooting interest at all. Hate that Mayweather/Marquez has been postponed. I was looking forward to that fight. JM Marquez was impressive in his last win against Juan Diaz, who is a pretty solid fighter in his own right. Cubano
I did not see the fight but African fighters usually do not have luck with the referees. Ike Quartey beat Oscar de la Hoya and he got robbed when they fought long time ago.
