Chisoxfn
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 02:09 PM) But KW said 2-3 times that Viciedo's contract was essentially, long-term replacing the sunk costs for Swisher's long-term deal. That's pretty close. That was different though cause we are talking about a major league contract in a sense. It wasn't related to the dollars put aside for the draft and minor league scouting, imo. Just like Alexei was major league money. But I too can't imagine the pools of money being completely unrelated and I figured when the Sox took all that money in, it meant that they wouldn't spend a ton on there draft picks that hadn't yet signed. I personally think that bringing in these type of contracts means you need to pay even more for your draft picks because when you have highly paid players on your roster (and no additional room to add payroll) the impact of a cheap minor leaguer with ability is even greater, imo. Its why we won't see Flowers, Danks, Hudson, or Beckham traded anytime soon. Probably not Viciedo either. They are part of the new core. Wanne
On a collegiate level...I'm actually shocked and pretty thrilled Josh Spence from ASU (the Aussie lefty pitcher in the CWS) didn't sign with the Angels. He was a 3rd round pick i believe. He either feels he can do better (which I'm not sure about)...but honestly I think he just wanted another year of college. Who knows. That and Toronto didn't sign another ASU recruit, Jake Barrett (3rd round). ASU only lost 2 recruits to signing this year. They'll be stacked next year I think. Barrett's a stud. Toronto were one of the big signing day losers for me failing to sign 1S pick Paxton, 2nd round pick Eliopoulos (two Canadians) as well as the aforementioned Barrett. It's not like they didn't just save bunch of money by trading Rios either. Must be a pretty weak month to be a Blue Jays fan.

southsider2k5
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 11:33 AM) I'll settle for Noel Arguelles. Again, not gonna happen.

The Sox are not investing millions of dollars into starting pitching for a long, long time. We have four great starting pitchers under contract for something like 3-4 years. It just isn't cost efficient to do.
oldsox
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 10:24 AM) I completely agree. I think his agent f***ed him over big-time. But he also screwed himself over. I never saw a final list of signees. Is there a link available?

Springfield Soxfan
This is from today's Baseball America's ranking of top 30 prospects in the Cape Cod League, pretty critical of the Sox on this one. 5. Bryan Morgado, lhp, Bourne (Jr., Tennessee) After the White Sox added $117 million in contracts by acquiring Jake Peavy and Alexis Rios, they opted not to give an over-slot bonus to Morgado, their third-round pick. They may come to regret that decision, because he had the most electric stuff of any lefty in the league. Following a rough spring at Tennessee, Morgado still battled his command and delivery at times with Bourne. But at his best, the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder showed a low-90s fastball that touched 95, a tight slider and the makings of a useful changeup. Though he was draft-eligible as a redshirt sophomore—he missed 2007 following Tommy John surgery—he's still just 20. "He was the best pitcher in the league, the most complete pitcher in the league," Chatham manager John Schiffner said. "Velocity, makeup, breaking ball—it's all good."
